FINALLY! Snagged from my hardware store (the dump) scrap pile, old school battery charger without a microprocessor. Couple hours of enjoyable tinkering and care in the garage by the pellet stove to bring it back to safe working condition, and make it look nice again. Perfect for a long, low, slow charge to bring those neglected batteries right back around that the processor controlled one refuses to work with .
I have one similar to that...only its 6/12V...just used it today. The only thing its ever needed was to replace the auto resetting 10A breaker.
Unlike my big heavy modern charger, this one even has a handle on it to pick it up! Who knew? There was a sibling to this one that was 2-10A but it was really rough and double the physical size so I opted for this one. If I'm in a hurry, I can bring the voltage up enough in a battery with this one to satisfy the microprocessor charger. I regret buying that thing every time I use it, but it was pretty spendy so I haven't tossed off a bridge ...yet...
Funny. I just had to use mine to bring a small AGM battery up enough that the "smart charger" could do its thing (supposed to be a desulphator) just the other night.
That's exactly what you want. I just gave my Schumacher charger a good cleaning. Sometimes simpler is better.
Schumacher has lost me, unless I've missed something on their website all they have now "fully automatic" crap. That's what my "new" charger is and I hate it. One of these days I'm going to find something to make a handle and put one on it, plus it will provide a place to put the cables which it lacks. I bought one of their battery tenders for my truck that lasted almost to the day of the one year warranty. I'm not much on being a part of "disposable society" so I messed with it for a while and traced it to a failure in one of the components, but couldn't find a way to identify what it was, so in the trash for a 10 cent component which irks me to no end. I was eyeing a Century manual charger, but now with some luck I should be all set for the foreseeable future .
Great older charger! I have an older Schumacher 2/10 amp. No micro processor. That's a perfect charger for ATV and tractor batteries for a (quick) charge.
If your faced with a dead battery and a sensor charger you can hook it up, plug it in and flash it with a small battery. I used a battery from a smoke alarm and it was enough. Another time I used a Dewalt battery. Once the charger starts it will keep going.
I moved to Battery Tender brand maintainers for vehicles / equipment that set. They work well. The Kubota has its original 2011 battery and has been on a maintainer since new. The Zero turn, truck and the car we store in winter also have one hooked to them currently. Between those and a jump pack, I no longer have a the need for a traditional battery charger.
I have been using the battery tenders myself for the past few years. Currently have them on ZT mower , tractor and the splitter. Funny I bought a jump pack about two years ago when the wifes car wouldn't start haven't needed it since then.
I just bought one of those lithium battery jumper packs on black Friday...wife was having issues with her van starting, but not since! I was just going to swap out batteries between our two vehicles so I could "keep an eye" on the one from her van, but the parts store said they both tested "bad", even though I haven't had a lick of trouble from mine, and she hasn't hers since either...Ima just let 'em be for now I guess. (note to self: parts store tester reads all batteries as "bad")
