Combine a full time job, rain every weekend, minimum daylight hours, and squishy daytime ground, and it makes things tough.

    Anyone else firewood at night?

I only do it when we are in a heatwave and day time temps are pushing upper 90;s for days on end.

Yessir, minimum 50 hour weeks, and 3 little girls that take my weeknights up. Most of my firewood and project time takes place between 3am- 6am!

Rechargeable batteries and headlamps are my friend

Only once years back I needed fire wood.My brother had a friend who had dead standing hardwood as straight as telephone poles and a little bit wider. He said we could cut all we wanted.Got out there late afternoon and started dropping into the night until we got a full load. That stuff was ready to burn and was a blessing.Went back during the day and got the rest.

I try not to make it a regular thing. The factors I mentioned earlier have made this year a bear to do much.

I would absolutely never ever be felling trees in the dark, no matter how well the area is lit up. Bucking, splitting and loading by light is perfectly fine though.

Have been considering it. Think I’d appreciate it even more in the summer months. Only downside is rattlesnakes move around at night.

Sounds like a fun thing on a full moon. Would do it in the winter. I don’t mess with wood stacks without full ability to see Sneaky Snake.

I live in between two large denning areas. They’re around I just don’t go looking for them :)
Truth be told I’d be more worried about my city bred dog. He ain’t the brightest bulb in the refrigerator.

I tried it once but the shadows made it too hard to judge the tip. Hit the ground and there went the chain. When it gets warmer no way because of snakes! That looks like a huge skin, would not like to step on that guy by accident.

As you stated, Case, with work schedule, weather, life events, getting things done on the woodyard can be tough. Never dropped any trees at night, but have bucked and split plenty. Usually when I'm on 7AM-7PM shift...

I never dropped trees in the dark, but have hauled and split. I hand split and for me It takes me a few rounds to get adjusted to the shadows while splitting.

I was at a forest service saw training about 20 years ago when they told me that it is illegal in all 50 states to fall a tree at night. This probably only applies to public land, but the reasoning is sound. There is enough stuff to go wrong even when you can see it happening. Our days are short in the winter. Mostly I just hang out by the wood stove after work, but I have been known to roll out lights to get some wood split or moved. I wired my woodshed for lights for this reason also. Be safe out there!
