Neighbor had a medium size hickory that died and needed down. Had to put a cable and winch to it , had a decent lean towards his house. Going to bring the wood home tomorrow and add to hoard ! I gotta say , I love the smell of hickory being cut better than anything else. Hard to beat that smell for me.
I almost never get hickory. I happened to get one a few months ago, first one in a few years, but when I showed up I was disappointed as the tree had been down some time and had started to rot; but some of it was rock hard too. I salvaged about 1/3 cord out of it.
thanks Brad. I got two last year from the same property. I cut them about 8”-12” for cooking. I don’t even have a wood smoker anymore but we cook on the outdoor fire in the summer and fall and like it for that. Plus there is always someone here looking for smoking wood. Friends and family have an open door help yourself policy here so they do juts that. I have not decided what I am going to do with this one yet. I just got it all home and they are in 6’-8’ logs still. I will probably cut it 22-24 and use for firewood, still have probably half a cord of the shorter stuff left.
