From the article: The pending deadline has hearth shops responding by discounting pre-2020 stoves by as much as 40 percent, to reduce inventory.
And: The EPA began issuing performance standards for new wood stoves in 1988, when a typical stove might belch 15 or more grams per hour of particulate. The smoke limit set in 2015 was 4.5 grams per hour. Next May, it ratchets down to 2 grams.
I'm not a big fan of the EPA. They've screwed up Industries all across the U.S.

They've also helped in some areas. As I said in another thread, balance in all things in life is key.

This will change and loosen! Not to get political but a certain party is coming after us burners "again" but they forget about the 15 Million acres that burned in wild fires through out the United States in 2019 but it's the wood stove peoples fault! I have already written the President about this! Not that it'll do any good but I have!!! Sooner or later, someone will get it!

...and they’re still burning, Dave. If there weren’t so many peoples homes being destroyed and their lives endangered I’d be tempted to make a joke right now...but it’s no joking matter, so I will refrain.

Agreed! It's horrible in that "aspect"! But I also have to think; Please give me the floor here... Here in NJ, you can't re-build in certain flood areas if your home was destroyed in the past, most places here you need flood, hurricane and wind damage insurance.
We have a very good friend who is in real estate who explained that disclosures have to be given when a house is on the market/purchased. The bank also want's them for their $$$$$$. Now, Who the "F#@K buy's or builds a home on the side of a hill that has "BURNED" in the past 10 years prior? Are these people nuts, stupid or have plenty of $$$$$$$$$$$$ that they just don't care? One guy on the news said this is the third time he's been burned out! To me, he's a complete moron/idiot!!!:headbang::headbang::doh:
I live in New Jersey and know the areas in California that will burn, It happens nearly every year. I "Truly" feel for the first time folks who lost everything! But I'd be "looooooooooooong" gone after the first time!

No Question about it...the wild fires are devastating to say the least...the thing that I don't understand is: there are high risk areas for wild fires out west, not secret information, so why do so many build homes with wood siding? Instead of masonry/metal? I would say metal roofs are a must have out there. I know that in some cases masonry/metal are more expensive, sure beats a burn out though.

We'll be seeing every stove burning with a catalyst.

I don't know how I feel about that. It definitely will make the stoves all cost more.

Not me!!! As long as I can find a used Fisher somewhere! I have 2 right here in NJ that "will" be coming with me to NH. They'll be installed "after" the house is built.

In my old VC Vigilant I could get it roaring, but the chimney stack would be showing nothing but vapor lines coming out. Regulating the stoves is only the mechanical portion- it doesn't do anything for the fuel you're using... I don't really get it. I cannot for the life of me figure out how doing anything about the stoves can overcome people burning wet wood.
I'm sure no one cares about my opinions but wont new EPA stoves emit the same as a non EPA stove if the wood supply is garbage?

They make it to where the newer stoves are finicky about their fuel, and if you want to continue to use wet wood, you will have a real battle keeping the place warm! At that point most people will just give up wood heat...but the smart ones will just shape up their wood supply! :stack::stacker::axe::stack: :saw:

Exactly! A small percentage of this has to do with the environment. The larger percent has to do with "BIG UTILITY" "BIG OIL"! If your not CSS your own stuff or buying wood, your lining the mogul's pockets. The more dependent on the ((system)) the more we lose and ((they)) have us by the cahones.

Then the "law makers" in bed with the power companies make laws that you can only burn "this or that" kind of stove, make it so expensive on materials, make stoves priced $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. so nobody will want to buy them, testing of air quality and blah, blah, blah... Don't think it can't happen? Our good friend Coaly can tell you the laws in the P.N.W. where you can only burn certain times and some places are "Completely banned" from burning. That's when I'd have to move the Freak out of there!!! :headbang::headbang::headbang:

makes me want to buy another wood stove just to keep in storage. I really don't see any issues with the limits set now, ratcheting them down more really is just a way to force people into the petroleum racket. Maybe that is who is lobbying for the stricter emissions. All the frackers who want us to consume mass amounts of natural gas/propane or heating oil...
Too much govt isn't a good thing, it has it's place but when it gets heavy handed like this it is ridiculous.

Does this new law also apply to coal stoves? I have no idea what they put out...just trying to figure out if this emission stuff is across the board.

    Thanks
