My local softwood pellet maker Lacwood's (200 miles north of me) are secretly putting extra BTUs into their pellets, guess what it is?

Corn, Some mills use it to clean the dies from what a mill rep told me. From what he said, If they get to dry a mix they will put some corn in to help control moisture and remove the dry cakes that build in the mill die. Corn holds a lot of moisture. So a small amount can raise the moisture level pretty quickly.

Are you seeing a whole lot of it?

Just the occasional time being. I wasn't aware of the usage of corn in the process of pellets, good to know. It's sure better than what other people have found, somewhere no one wants their stove to find for them:eek:

Biohazard fuel more like it lol.. Seriously though I do find pellet fuel and stoves interesting.. Generally speaking anything that isn't oil, gas or electrical for heating is fascinating. The machines that create pellet fuel are also of interest.. The Wiseway stove is completely innovative .. I would like to see this technology in a traditional woodstove appearance though.. Does anyone here burn a Wiseway pellet stove?

Technically they are supposed to list the adders on the PFI label . Yours should say corn and might say as die lube if they carry a PFI label.

This should help with the unwanted stuff in the mix. I'd be leary of any pellet company that carries a PFI label and isn't listing its adders/fillers on the label. If you visibly see an unlisted adder, Please post so we can get PFI involved. Lets make them actually earn their money and do something useful! ;)

You got this right. Some stove manufactures are very specific telling you that using pellets other than wood pellets will void your warranty. Wood isn't corn. I feel the pellet manufacture should state exactly what the pellet is composed of.

My new stove said I could burn a 50/50 corn wood blend. What might the advantage of this be?

Most of the manuals were written when corn was supper cheap. People were mixing to reduce cost and help get by in pellet shortages....

If you have a local farmer and you can score corn on the cheap? By all means give it a whirl, But make sure your venting is corn rated as well.

Hey Jay, I wonder how a combo wood/corn pellet would work? Maybe we need to go see our friend about making a batch on purpose.

IIRC, There is a mill doing a wood/pellet combo. Not sure they are pelleting the corn in with the wood or just mixing corn in with wood. They have difference blend ratios as well.

My guess is that they're just mixed together in the bag. If they were pelletized together, I'm pretty sure they would mention it in their advertising.

Pelletized would help with auger clunking from the missed red eye's and bits during cleaning of whole corn.

Wonder if he would do a special mix for us. I'm game as long as he doesn't get carried away with mixing in the grass like the coffee run.

I think I got a good wood dust source and I know where to score corn(though no very cheap). Maybe I can get some of the screenings when they clean the batch for a deal. We won't need whole corn IMHO. ;)
