As some of you know, I just prunned my trees this past week and I used my 170. I don't have a complaint at all and it's a great little saw, but would a muffler mod be worth doing on it to get a little more uumph...? I realize you not gonna get a massive change in it for a trimmer saw but has anyone approched this?
The only thing that I could think of negative on this is does it have a adjustable carb? That was the one issue with my 180... But Honeyfuzz but a adjustable on it. Also make sure to keep the screen on the spark arrestor clean.
What negative if any effects does advancing the timeing have on a stock saw or even muffler modded saw? If the benefit is this good why dont the manufactures just time it like that to start?
With the timing advanced the saw will kick sometimes when you start it. The saw cranks a little harder now too.
They probably also having the timing set conservative so if someone runs old gas they won't burn a piston.
Good stuff Guy's!!! I'm not a super mechanic, but I can get it done. pound for pound, that is a "super" little saw! When I was up in the bucket holding it with one hand, I was saying to myself… Boy I wish It would cut faster Thanks for the input, it gives me some ideas!
Chain goes a long way on these little guys too. What are you running? Hint: anything other than yellow chisel chain is the wrong answer.
Grab a loop of yellow chisel chain the next time you find yourself at the dealership. I use semi chisel on my other saws due to dirty wood and the occasional unintended ground strike. I normally only use my 180c for limb work so I have no worries about dirt.
I've got a 017/MS170 Frankensaw, It's a 017 chassis with a MS170 jug, has an aftermarket fully adjustable carb and muffler modded. I'm running 3/8 picco in .043 Stihl 61PMM3 chain on a 14" bar. The little thing just rips through wood. I wouldn't get to carried away with the chain, I think it could get to aggressive for the little saw that it is. I love the exhaust not the mad little bumblebee has, like a wanna be big saw.
Great little saw there, 94BULLITT, I must read more about ignition timing. Besides a search of the forum, can anyone tell me the ins and outs of performing an adjustment to the ign. timing? Thanks, Eric VW
I am thinking you have to cut the key off and then just turn the flywheel a bit and tighten it back down with lock tight. Least thats what I have read here and on AS. But I am sure the other guys can tell you better.
That sounds like NOT fun if ya screw it up! Who else can share their experience/how to- in advancing ignition timing. Eric VW
