Ever since I brought my property 14 years ago I have wanted to build a new shed as the existing ones did not really suit my needs, they did the job but I always wanted something special.

About 4 years ago I finished paying for the home loan and started saving for the shed. 3 years ago I started trying to get a planing permit. Every time I called the shire council planning department I got frustrated I was told they frowned on applications bigger than 250 square meters.

During this time I got several quotes from different manufacturers/builders but none of the companies I dealt with would help with the planning issues. Not to be deterred I kept saving money and working plenty of overtime shifts.

Back in February my father asked what was happening and I told him I was a little stumped, Dad had heard good things about a company in Stawell called Action steel industries. Stawell is a country town 120km (75 miles) away 1 hour 20 minuets drive. So one day dad picked me up after work and drove me over there to have a sit down and chat with them and get a quote.

Well I will have to say here that Action steel industries is the best company I have ever dealt with, they made everything seem easy, everything I wanted to do they could or would find a way where other companies would only build their standard designs, action steel industries would custom build whatever I wanted. And most importantly they had no issues with applying for the permits on my behalf.

I received the quote the next day and put a deposit down so they could start on the planning application. Then I started the nerve racking wait for the decision from the shire council.

In June the permits were approved and it was like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

The location for my new shed.

A week later the earth mover came to level the site and make a new drive way.

I had cut the existing barbed wire fence to put in the driveway, so I needed to put in a new gate and re-strain the fence. Dad was on holidays in Queensland at the time so I borrowed his big tandem trailer and his old nissan patrol to tow it, loaded his 2 dogs and my dog in the back and headed in to town. I went to a farm supply store that is owned by an old workmate and picked up a 16 foot gate, hinge kit, an 8’ post, 2x 7’ posts and a stay pole. I also brought new fencing pliers and a new wire strainer because dad’s were in his shed somewhere but I had no hope of finding them.

Digging the hole for the 8’ gate post.

    Gate hung and fence strained.

I made a small piece of picket fence out of pallet wood. I was inspired by Pallet Pete.

Friday I received a call from the erector/builder. He wanted to come over and check out the site and drop off some equipment.

This is his truck parked at the back of the shed pad.

His scissor lift is heavy it left good tracks in my paddock.

    Telescopic handlers are very cool.

    Yesterday morning the frame arrived.

Unloading looked a little precarious at times due to the power pole, overhead power lines and trees. I’m glad I put a big gateway in there.

Sweet! Around here a "shed" is usually about 100 square feet.

Another good day today with fine weather perfect for working outside.

Here the blokes are marking out where the holes need to be dug for the concrete footings.

This is the best way to dig holes.

These holes in the pad are footings for the mezzanine.

Nice clean holes down in to the clay.

15 holes dug quicker than I did one fence post hole.

The bucket was put on the Tele-handler to clean up the mess.

    Footings dug out.
I hope it doesn’t rain tonight!
    Concrete trucks come tomorrow.

Yes I think what you blokes call pole barns we call sheds.

Check out this old 180,000 square foot shed that is a few hours drive north west of here.

So I gotta quit lurking and ask, What do you call a building that is <150 sq/ft then? As Mwalsh9152 stated, around here, a large shed is 12'x12' and most sheds are smaller. Any bigger and they are called a barn or garage.

We still call them sheds. 12’x12’ or smaller is called a garden shed in Australia. A garage is for storing cars and usually attached to or immediately adjacent to the house. Machinery sheds are large sheds for tractors, combine harvesters, trucks (big rig’s) and such, hay sheds, grain storage sheds. The only time they are called barns down here is when they are built to resemble the traditional American style, with the raised centre and lean to on either side.

    This is a big shed!

shed/barn is used rather interchangeably here - there's always the local vernacular at play

A fire station is often called a barn, but fill it with lumber instead and it might be called a shed. There's no set rule that's for sure.
