Hi All- I am unable to get my second ton from Robbins of Logik-E. I got the matras and as previously stated my stove is not happy with them, a lot of dust and almost immediate black glass. I have a Hastings which is not the easiest to clean. I have never had issues with Vermont's, Logik-E etc. I have a choice I can make or just get my money back, 1.2 tons of Lacrete I would pay a bit more, or 1 ton Lg. Lg has a bit lower btu. But would like to hear opinions on either. FOr now I am putting a mix of harwood with the matras, to help minimize the previous issues. Thanks for input!
Both options are fine, go with whatever costs less. We are having a very mild winter, you don't need high octane. I probably just jinxed us.
LaCrete if you can get them. Most consistent pellet I have ever burned. No bad batches, just great quality. If they become available again I will scoop them up.You probably can't go wrong with either.I've bought 6 tons of Matra's the last 2 years and one of the tons burned dirty. It was strange because the rest burned great.
I will go with Lacretes, with our schedules I only burn a few bags a wek, so this will set me up for next year also. Thanks all for the input!
Yeah they have them in stock so I will pay an extra 60 bucks which makes it about 360 ish for 60 bags.
Interesting. Burning Matra for past couple yrs now. Very high btu.. bag claims 8800..? Low ash. Clean burns for me with Harman P61A. My only tick is lot of fines in the bags. I also do not remember ever burning a smaller pellet than Matra. Like corn kernels. Prob easy to break up during movement causing the excessive fines I would assume..pricey...
Don't forget Matras bridge/funnel in the hopper. I've burned many brands that do this (mostly pines) but Matras definitely hold the championship title in this aspect. The stove will shut down, starved for fuel, so you open the hopper lid and see it is still well over half full, and you're just looking at the funnel and the steepness of the slope and wondering, how is that even possible? lol...Gotta keep that hopper topped off at all times when burning them...
You are spot on about the funneling. People think it is due to softwoods sticking to the sides and not going down and are always recommending waxing the pellet walls but don't see that working since it's not pellets sticking causing the problem i have even tried ceramic coating and doesnt work.. Too much sawdust at bottom is the culprit. So far my doug firs don't cause any funneling. Just bought ton of Northern Warmth super sprucewoods so will see how they do. Can't imagine any other brand with more sawdust than Matra. Btw: just found out other day its pronounced MA tra. Not May tra as I have been calling them.
I should specify that waxing the sides of the hopper has not worked for me with the Matra. this method might work with other softwoods that do Not have abundance of fines in the bags and "Stick" to hopper sides, but have not had reason to wax with other brands so far.
Regarding waxing the hopper-if you use spray graphite that works great, just make sure the stove is DEAD COLD as the fumes can make it to the warm burn pot and flash back. This can result in a winter tan and thinner eyebrows. Ask me how I know
Well between the 2 I chose neither, Woods and Sons came up and I grabbed them instead, Hastings loves them!
