I’ve got a gen 1 kuuma sitting in my basement. On the local swap and sell is a v200 I believe I could get for 400 . Is it worth upgrading or should I keep the K1 ?
My house is one floor and less than 1400 sq.

That sounds like a good price.

It will certainly cost more than just the purchase price by the time it’s installed.
For sake of argument let’s say I could have it in place and working for 500 . That’s 7 cords . How many yrs does anyone figure it’d take to save 7 cords ? ( I know it’s allot of guessing)

Possible investment for the future if your current stove develops issues? Or maybe flip it? Wish you were closer. I have a buddy in need of a replacement. Pm me.

$400?! Geez ow...as long as it isn't completely roached I'd jump on it...they aren't making the 200 again until the 2020 EPA testing is done (supposedly by the end of the year) but when they do you are looking at the better part of $5k.
Call Lamppa and ask what to look for as far as problems...but as long as the computer/damper works and the firebox and heat exchanger look OK, it should be fine...they are pretty rebuildable as needed. Daryl Lamppa still heats his house with one of the original VF100's.

    So you buy your wood?
How much wood do you run through the K1 in a year?
From what I've heard, most people can run 4-5 cords a year through a VF200 or 100...depending on your house, wood supply, etc...but that would be a pretty good average I'd say...

How's yours doing? You get any weather worthy of letting 'er stretch her legs a little?

I bought the house the end of August this year so I don’t have any idea how much wood I’ll burn . I’m away from the house much better than 40 hrs a week . I hope to scrounge my wood from here on out but I wanted to get started so I bought.

I'm sure Lamppa could tell you if there would be a big difference in wood usage between the two...the VF's are sure user friendly though...load and go pretty much. Much better candidate for someone that is gone from home 8-10 hrs a day (IMO)

How long away from the house on a typical day?

I'm not familiar with that stove/ furnace, but as long as you work 8 hr days I'm sure there will at least be coals left to restart.

Yeah I used a VF200 a couple winters back...load at 6:15 or so in the morning...there was still coals (or more) by the time I was home at 4 pm...using hardwoods.
But I do tend to leave some ash build up at the back of the firebox (inch or two) instead of scraping it clean in the back before each load like they recommend.

Sounds like I should use the stove I’ve got a season and see what I’ve got

Sounds like a solid plan. See how it goes. Are you new to Minnesota, and how is the insulation and windows on the new place?

Well, I have not had very much cold weather yet. Just enough to build a small fire with the crap wood and take the chill out of the house. I still haven’t got the return air from the upstairs ceiling hooked up. That thing will run us out if I let her stretch her legs out in this weather. But, it won’t be long before that all changes. Wish I had some good seasoned hardwoods but the fir and aspen will have to make do.

Maybe...but I'd still snag that VF200...that is a solid investment as long as its not junk...you never see them that cheap. That almost sounds like a new homeowner that doesn't want to burn wood and doesn't know what they have there...obviously you'd have to have the room to store it, if you weren't going to run it this year.
As far as the install costs you referred to earlier...should be minimal since you already have a chimney for it...just need a section of 8" round duct to connect to your existing duct system, unless there isn't one, then you'd just run a duct to a couple registers...not expensive.

Is it normal to accumulate stoves faster than chainsaws ? I’m going to post the older kuuma in the for sale section. I bought a more current v-200 from a customer at work today!!
