We have a shell of a cabin on our property that sat empty for several years. Squirrels and snakes moved on in. The facia boards near the drip edge are rotten in several places and squirrels managed to chew through my small patch jobs until I covered them with metal mesh. Do you all think I should replace the 1"x 6" boards and wrap with aluminum or go with PVC boards? I was leaning towards brown aluminum until I checked out the PVC board options. I could get them in dark brown with a simulated wood grain. Just not sure what option would be best to keep the critters at bay.
Nice pic of the cabin you have there! I'd go with the aluminum wrapped 1X6. Haven't done anything with the pvc; thats why I'd go with the aluminum. Works great around these parts.
Thanks yooperdave. Cabin needs lots of work but it will be a fun project. After I get the facia replaced I need to get several large branches cut.that are on the roof. Then the process of chinking and staining will commence.
What a neat looking cabin! I hope that when you get working on it, you will share pics of the progress and end result.
I will certainly share pics along the way but the end result will take a long time. It's a work in progress for sure.
Get the branches away now then commence to work on the cabin..Critters love the "branch highway" And I agree with yoop go for the metal not pvc...Critters will chew the crap out of pvc...Best of luck with that sweet little cabin...
Now if I can find someone who has a metal brake and some experience. I have talked to 4-5 guys but don't get return calls. I could rent a brake but the end result would not look pretty.
Carpenter's are just trained monkeys... Just watch a few YouTube videos...or stay at a Holiday Inn...
There are places that sell pre made alum fascia. 6" & 8" in several colors were in stock back when I dealt with them. The best type of "place" to look for is a roofing/siding place where the installers buy their material. Not sure if you ever get over into the Montgomery Co. (Rockville) area of MD but look up "The Roof Center" or ABC Supply. They may have a branch closet to your area. I'd bet they both have a website to check.
Went to ABC in our area and got pre made fascia boards in musket brown and a roll of metal to match. Was able to rent a metal brake from Sunbelt for a pretty reasonable price and had a local handyman help. The vinyl soffit also looks pretty good. Next up is the roof. It's 25 years old and getting pretty soft.
Slowly making progress on the cabin. New fascia, new roof and thanks to the warm December weather a fresh coat of stain.
That is a lovely little get away. Does it have a little wood stove? Make some hot cocoa, put up your feet and read a good book. Peace and quiet
One day it will have a nice little wood stove. It has a chimney that will need to be extended for a better draft. I have plenty of work to do on the inside but I can't wait until we can use it as a place to relax and hang out with the family.
