Busted out back this afternoon. Perfect weather, 39F and overcast, to get some more. Came across this white pine standing dead. Other years, never would consider it. But now that I’m a practicing soft wood burner I thought, nice!
Oh yeah! Nice haul! I brought another load of fugly pine “splits” into the house to burn today. Excellent for this mild weather in the 30’s and 40’s. Not many coals to worry about and I find that the knotty ugly pieces last quite awhile
There’s a few of us who started burning softwoods this season. Feel foolish for throwing it aside all these years.
That looks like the bark beetles might have gotten into it in 2016/2017 when it was dry. I used to leave those for the woodpeckers to feast on and use. But I've been using more and more pine as well. I still have a supply of pine leaners from a storm a few years back. Some are weathering better than others. No pitch to slow ya down when the bark is falling off.
I went out really to grab some smaller standing dead oak in various spots. Just to get a trailer load and enjoy the afternoon. So I had the 550xp with me. It went pretty quick anyway. Hand sharpened before I went out.
I stack them all. Pine, hemlock and spruce. Great for shoulder season and gives the hardwoods time to think a bit longer.
Nice rounds. Good day for it too Mike. Will you burn that in the Spring or is it slated for next year?
Little later getting cutting season started this year, but neighbor needed some trees removed Last week I and got out this afternoon for a load of cherry. Weather turned nasty but still got it taken care of.
