I talked to my log guy a week or so ago trying to get an order in before mud season. He said he had lots of orders but would put me on the list. Today he called and said he was cutting in town and had logs he could drop off! “Only issue is its 99% red oak” he says. I don’t see a problem with that at all. This wood will get me on the 3 year plan! I see one small birch and 2 small beeches. The rest is fairly straight Red Oak. I’d like to get it worked up before black flys are out.
Will that 99% red oak be ready in 2-3 years Warner? This the only issue I have with oak as firewood towards the 3 year plan... sort of a latent 3 year plan in my book. YMMV.
Time will tell. I have a bunch of dead trees on the property that I will be focusing on after I get through this wood. The oak could sit another year if I get the dead stuff processed.
You should have time but the way things are going those buggers might show up a bit early this year. Congratulations on the red oak.
Nice. if you have the room and can wait 3yrs, red oak works for me. They look like decent sized. Not too big.
All of my life I have been burning wood that was “seasoned”. Like cut in spring burned the following winter. When I get to this it will be the driest red ok I have ever had.
That’s an awesome score. I just finished burning through my 4 year old Red Oak stash and now am trying out my 2 year old black oak in the fireplace and it’s working out pretty good, every now and again I get one of the bigger splits hissing out of the ends. I am going to work on making my splits smaller in the future for my fireplace as they seem to take off great after 2 years css and don’t hiss much at all.
We went out for dinner after he dumped the 3rd load. I had done some light repair on one of his trucks earlier in the week. He was kinda miffed when I wouldn’t take any money. I just asked that he show up when I need wood and we are good. He brought a 4th load as payment. More reason to get my butt in gear! I’m feeling a back up saw may be in order as well.
Hmmm, than never really occurred to me. Unfortunately with the kids I never get a full day to work on the wood pile. It’s usually a couple hours after work at a time.
The kids just got home from a weekend with my parents. They are overtired and crashing hard from the sugar high. I think I’ll run the splitter for a bit! Lol
Put em to work! My 7 y/o grand son loves to play with the equipment. I've never bothered to tell him he's actually working.
