Ok, doesn't seem much like the green ash I got a couple weeks ago. Had a spicy smell. Maybe allspice?
I noticed. So what type of ash do you think it is. Ash I said, it doesn't seem much like the green ash I just dealt with.
I thought ash when I walked up to it, but was a lot heavier than I had expected. I have only dealt with the huge pieces for a couple weeks ago so I am not very familiar yet.
Fantastic. By the way, I really want to thank all of you guys. With out the expertise do our group I would still be dragging out whatever trash I find at the dump. But now I am brining home prime rib because even if I don't know what a certain specimen is, I know what all the other trashy woods are and don't waste my time even though they may be the easier scores.
That's what is so nice about this forum....you'll get lots of good info, it will get better and better as time progresses.. We're a team, my brother!!
I'll agree with the others. Definitely white ash and yes, it can be ready to burn in a year. By the looks of the bark, it has been eaten on by the EAB so it was destined to die so good that you got it.
If that's the case it would be the first for any Iowa county not on the Illinois border. And we are pretty far west. Incidentally, just drove down Brewer street today and noticed one ash tree completely bare. Not a good sign.
Sad, Sad Sad for the Ash. Not here yet. For SE IL, Is Northern IA seeing it?. I have a healthy Ash on the property.
I was trying to find a map, they just found another infested county Friday. 4 counties here now, I think two in East Central and one each in north east and South East. All by the Mississippi. Nothing official up my way but things are getting suspicious.
I agree it is White Ash. The bark looks good for Ash, but there are lots of similar looking barks out there. The wood is very white, little or no color difference between the sapwood layer and the wood farther inside, plus a dark heartwood - all of these are typical of White Ash. Elm would have darker wood, Black Locust would have a more greenish/yellow wood.
