I struck a deal with a local kid to split everything in my yard for $300. There is easily two cords. He has a splitter, and says he'll start this weekend. It's worth it to me, so I'm not splitting all summer. Here's my to-do pile out front: And there's more stashed out back as well. Got some white oak and hard maple at the dump today too.
Sounds like a good deal all around as long as you don't keep bringing in more wood without adding to his earned money.
Yeah he didn't see what I had in the car! I told him we'd cut everything to size, though. And I'll help tote wood around. If he works hard I'll give him a tip.
I hire some of my students from time to time. I have found over the years it is best to explain the job and the amount of money it is worth to me to be completed. I then explain to them if they do it in one day they make more money. But if it takes them 3 or 4 days, it is their time they are wasting. Also then it allows me to "have no more jobs at this time" for the students that don't work out. And the hard workers, I find other jobs.
$300 seems like a lot to me just to split it. Do that 3 times and you'll have a new splitter bought and paid for of your own. Around here you can get 2 full cord cut split and delivered for a little notm than that. That's just me being cheap though.
I might end up buying a splitter, but this way I'll get to watch one in action. Sorry NH mountain man, I'll still come out sometime, or I'll see you up in Whitefield!
CountyLine 25-Ton Log Splitter at Tractor Supply Co. $899...they were $799 a few weeks back...I think a couple different people here bought one Mwalsh9152 did IIRC
$150 a cord is still roughly half the price of home heating oil. -And that money goes into the very local economy (maybe) Edit: and it gets done this year.
Home Heating Oil here is 2.85 a gallon. I had to order 125 gallons to get me thru summer!! I hate it BUT that is hot water til September. Living without hot water would make me ummm single. Probably averages 2 dollars a day at this price point. But hey my electric bill is only 70 dollars a month $35 for roughly 300 kw and rest to have service. Fair deal mid winter.
Returns home to find split playground equipment, split chain link fence, split BBQ, split rose bush ... Hopefully the kid doesn't take things too literally.
It sounds like a princely sum, but I'll be suprised if he manages to do it in a day. I had to talk him down from $200/cord, believe it or not.
I bought a splitter and I’m glad I did. But, there’s a local hardware store nearby that has a splitter that they rent out by the day. That might be a good option for you too, Midwinter
No I have girls!! stove and dryer gas, only had 100 amps to start with. Wife wanted lights in a dark garage and a pool so ripped out electric dryer put in propane and she smiled.. electric dryer died sop wasn't that much more. We use our clothesline when its above freezing so June and July
No pickup truck, and no hitch on my SUV. There's most likely a splitter in my future, but for now, my time and labor are more valuable to me than the money. I just want to have it done, and move on to stacking. I split oak all last summer when I could have been having fun. Anyway, it remains to be seen if the kid shows up. Pics of course if it happens.
