If you have enough clientele, you could institute "expedite fees".

Used to sell hay. Supper time, never failed, someone would want 1 bale. Oh and they wanted to back up to the barn, couldn't carry it 50 feet. I got to charging more after a certain time and no Sunday sales. It is like the old saying, "lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part." Charge more, emergency rooms and tow trucks make great money, no reason you can't when they make declarations like that.

Our "weather" event has been on the news most of the last week. I have been hustling to get more wood in before things get crappy in the woods. Phone has been going nuts the last 3 days. All the wood I sell is picked up here at the farm. I had everything sold except 1 pile I was holding for a regular who gets a 1/2 cord every 3 weeks. Only had 1 unexpected guy show up looking for some fireplace wood to keep his wife happy. I filled up a bucket (1/8 cord) off that pile and dumped it in his truck. I told him $30 and he gave me $40 and said keep the change. :makeitrain" I've come to expect this panic buying over the years and don't get to excited.

One of the deliveries was to a guy that said he needed it before the storm, pretty much asap. I get there and he opens the garage and has a cord stacked rt there, im like that’s weird, he must have noticed the puzzled look on my face and says yea I bought that beautifully seasoned wood the other day go check it out. Needless to say this wood was bad, so heavy and fresh. He got an earful from me about these people and a free lesson on buying firewood.

Yep, welcome to the circus. Got a call last week, "I need two more cords of Oak asap", sure, I'll just whip that up out of nowhere. What part of I'm out of seasoned wood didn't you hear 6 weeks ago when I delivered to you? Gonna be an interesting rest of the winter I think. Some $$ to be made if I wanna bust my azz I guess.

More correctly, I have access to about 1200 acres of property owned by others that I'm free to cut on as I please. I have access to hundreds of cord of dead wood, both down & standing. Normally we'll skid & haul logs back to my place all winter to process the rest of the year, last winter killed me due to the warm temps & no frozen ground. We processed about 60 cord & split it between the two of us. It's only been about the last 3 weeks that the weather has been good to skid. Issue is time, if I spend a 1/2 day making two cord I lose a whole day skidding. I own an auto repair shop that's been stupid busy all year & hasn't left me with a ton of time to make firewood. The short days make it tough to process wood after work, & weekends really need to be spent skidding & hauling. The real question is $500.00 worth of firewood delivered worth more than what I can haul out of the woods in a day. I suppose I should just suck it up & make & deliver it.

I must have had over a dozen contact me about wood within the last 10 days...sorry folks, it's been gone since November. My son couldn't keep his firewood stand stocked the last 2 days. One point, while filling it, he had 4 customers stop and buy wood.

When I drove oil truck it was the same way. People would pay $40 extra for a same day delivery, then that same winter the company had so many calls they started charging $60 for same days. Some people would also pay extra for an underage charge and only order 50 gallons of oil, when the minimum was 100 gallons. The underage charge was $50. ANNNNNDDDDDD they'd pay $25 for a prime because the furnace ran out of oil.

    I just shook my head.

So instead of buying 100 gallons at lets say $2/gallon and paying $200 as long as you order it the day BEFORE you need it, you instead wait until the turning your thermostat doesn't work, then pay...

    50 gallons @ $2/gallon= $100 + $60 same day charge + $50 underage charge + $25 prime charge

So $235 for 50 gallons because you "couldn't afford" to order the full 100 gallons which BTW would have been $35 less then you just paid

    :faint:

The worst part is the exact same people would do the exact same thing a couple weeks later when the 50 gallons ran out, and half the windows in the house were open

I think if I sold firewood I'd keep a few "emergency" cords on hand for these "special" customers.

I keep those "emergency" cord on hand for myself. You never know what may go wrong.
