I have been looking at wood splitters for a long time. I did not like the way that most of the box store splitters were laid out. The axle is in the way on most of them when it is used horizontally. Commercial standalone splitters where too much for no more than I would use it. I had kicked the idea around of getting a splitfire 3203 or 3403 to run off the tractor. The biggest problems with this idea was if I wanted to cut wood somewhere else the tractor would have to be moved with the splitter. I was looking at Harbor Freights website and saw they had a splitter. It is pretty much the same splitter that Northern tool sold under the Power Horse name. I thought the pictures of it looked like it was pretty good. I watched videos of it on Youtube and it looked like it worked good. I could not find anybody saying anything bad about them. I also researched the Predator engine. It seems they have quite a following. I found mostly good things about them too. I called the 10 closest stores to me and none of them had one in stock. Some of them told me to call back on Thursday or Friday when they got their stock order. I did this for two weeks and no one got one in stock. I really wanted to see what I was buying but I went ahead and took a gamble on it and ordered it. I ordered it last Saturday and I got it Thursday. I put it together Thursaday, everything went smoothly. It started on the second pull. So for I am really impressed with this splitter. It is an extremely good value. Here is the crate the splitter came in, it had a box around it. I did a walk around video of the splitter. My first modification to the splitter, a hourmeter/ tach. Some wood split with it.
I looked everywhere and I could not find a 20 or 25% off coupon that is valid and could be used on a predator gas powered product. The newest coupons I could find that did not have that exclusion were January 2015.
Thanks for showing me the pic of the log ramp. I am thinking about adding a log lifter to it. Yes it is a 20 ton splitter.
They have a lot of similarities. It was $25. http://www.ebay.com/itm/291389125971?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
I know the one from HF is the same, but a different color than at least one other splitter. I read all the reviews on them. I was pretty impressed, and if I was to buy a new splitter, this would definitely be one of my top choices.
I have a Harbor Freight 7 ton electric I have been splitting all my wood for the last three and a half years
Nice splitter! I like... right off the bat... that the engine and "stuff" are waaay away from where all the work happens. I like my TB splitter a lot, but the engine is right in the line of fire...
We added that stub of stainless pipe to the foot on the engine side of the splitter to keep the stray split from making it's way onto the gas tank. Other modification was addition of some zirc fittings along the beam to grease easier. the beam on your splitter extends out the front, and has a longer tongue - you'll bend it eventually on a big round so use the jack when working on bigger stuff
Thanks. The lay out of the splitter is very nice. The engine is out of the way of the work area but a split could still fall on it. I plan on making a guard/ protector for the engine. I thought the pipe on yours was there to protect the engine. I like the idea of grease fittings on the beam. How long have you had your Powerhorse splitter? How much have you split and how is it holding up? I know at a quick glance our look alike but there are a lot differences.
Thanks, I'll update this thread with any modifications I make to the splitter or any repairs I have to do.
