Wow, this is the first load of ash I ever got.....and holy cow it is so easy to split.........I feel like I'm building the perfect holz hausen right now. So utterly satisfying.......now I know why people love ash. One quick aside - if there is evidence of EAB, is it risk to existing ash trees on my property to process it in to firewood and stack it? I haven't seen any "D" shaped holes but I have seen the roadmaps between the bark and the sapwood.
This is an adult ash borer...not sure what the young'ns look like...but if you saw their tracks...they're there. Yes, infected wood is an additional risk to your trees...but if the wood came from nearby, EAB is already in your area...and its just a matter of time for your trees...unless you treat them.
They say not to transport it more than 50 miles. I think it could affect your trees. Its already at your house though, so not much you can do now. On a positive note, Ash is a delightful firewood. Very light weight even fresh cut. Seasons very fast, and has decent BTU's.
No, it only effects your neighbors trees LMAO. As others have said it’s most likely already there. Some states have discontinued their ban on transporting Ash. They finally figured out you can’t stop them.
Yeah it was locally cut ash from a tree service guy. He works mainly right in my town and the surrounding areas so way less than 50 miles. I have one young ash tree and I have to look closely but I think I have one rather large one as well. Will look into treating them.
Not doing a holz hausen, but I am also working on an ash pile. Will be getting a cord or so out of what I though was going to be a small 1/3 cord scrounge. Lucky me. Good going LofthF!
The grub I saw doesn't look like the bell shaped eab grub. I looked that up as well. Thanks for the responses. I might have a different boring insect in this load.......Haven't burned any ash but now that I have my piles labeled and in a spreadsheet, I'll know where it is when it comes time to burn!
NYS lifted the EAB quarrantine btw. They gave up according to this article. New York gives up the fight, lifts ash quarantine
There may not be any holes but you can bet your booties that ash has been hit with the borer. Look at the bark and the flaking tells you the critter is or has been in there eating and the roadmap under the bark is more confirmation.
I think I just saw an EAB fly into the table I'm working on outside. Tried to catch it but alas I failed. That said there may be hope. Check out this cool article on how some trees survived an eab attack. Ash tree species likely will survive emerald ash borer beetles, but just barely
Split the last of the shorties today and I found what I was looking for - those damm "D" shaped holes. Oh well.
Even the shorties/"uglies" in the middle of the holz hausen are looking pretty studly........Loving ash! Now I need another load to complete the ash stack.
Even treated trees succumb I've got about 2 cords of ash that came from my neighbors and. He had them treated every year by a tree service. The ash on my land I treated with the Bayer tree and shrub formula, and they are already in my stacks, or about to be in my stacks.
