The bar on my saw is starting to wear out. It takes a 72 link chain but somehow I ended up with 2 80 link chains. Could I switch to a bar that works with 80 link chains or would I need to get a new drive gear as well. Any recommendations on bars would be welcome.
It looks like you can get a bar for those chains, if they are.325 .050. This chart is helpful. Link: Bar and Chain Fit Up Chart
You could have the saw shop shorten the chains too...if you want to stick with the same length bar...
I agree^^. I'd take them to a saw shop and ask them to be shortened to 72. As long as the pitch is the same (.325 or 3/8), no changes will need made to your saw.
I believe that the 450 Rancher uses a K095 mount in .325 Pitch, .050 Gauge. What kind of wood are you primarily cutting? If cutting Hardwoods that are approaching bar length diameter, a 24” bar might be more than the 450 Rancher is up to. If you are cutting mostly Softwoods, or smaller logs, and just occasionally a larger log, you might be ok with a 24” bar, but a 24” bar is asking a lot of a 55cc saw Make sure that a seller doesn’t try to sell a D009 Husqvarna “Large Mount” bar, even the larger 460 Rancher uses the K095 Husqvarna “Small Mount” bar Doug
Sorry for the confusion I had. I have a 20" .325 pitch .050 width with 80 links. It looks like I have to use a .325 pitch chain since my drive great is for this. Thanks for all your help. Chain sizing is complicated to me
Chain length is determined by one of the 3 numbers, drive link count. In your case, you need 72dl. Gauge is the width of that drive link. Either .050, .058 or .063 And pitch measures the spacing between 3 rivets on the chain and divide by 3. The ones most used are, .325, 3/8 and .404, There are others but not crazy common.
It's not that complicated. 1. Bar length - self explanatory. 2. Chain pitch - this is 1/2 the distance between 3 links. 3. Chain gauge - this is the thickness of the part of the chain that rides in the bar. These have to match. Too big and it won't fit and bind. Too small and it will wobble. And yes the pitch has to match your sprocket or else it will not work properly. Perhaps your original chain was 3/8 pitch which would explain less drive links for the same length bar. Make sense?
