Smoked 40# pork shoulder a few months back on a smoker I whipped out a week before. Used apple wood from a standing dead in the yard. I ended up rendering the fat and made some soap from it too.

That thing is full! Looks mighty tasty

Was that a virgin 55 gallon drum or did you have to do some clean up work before you made the smoker?

It held diesel motor oil, then diesel fuel. Burned a couple big fires in it, then ran it a couple time with the side firebox to dial it in. As a matter of fact, it's the drum I hauled the last filling of my fuel oil tank before I switched to wood!

How long did you burn the fires in it do ya think? I'd like to try and make a smoker, but am curious about the necessary prep of the barrel

I probably put about 5 med splits in the 55 drum. It burned for about 2-3 hours, I did this twice. I ran the side fire box 2 times dialing it in for probably 3 hrs each. After the first burn in the 55 there was no petro smell at all.

I do notice at work that Diesel engines smell a lot like a charcoal grill starting with charcoal starter fluid. o_O

I fed 16 people that night and they all took leftovers, not 1 got sick. That stuff burns off pretty quick.

Also not my first grill from an oil drum

That pork butt looks so tasty. And you even managed to get your stacks of wood posing in the background, very good. :)
