I voted hickory. I wouldn't use locust in my smoker.

Get up early, work late, take alot of Advil and get both.
I pick black locust just because I come across it less than hickory

If you don't give these poor Locust trees in our area half a chance, they'll soon go extinct! I vote Hickory 2020 for cutting! Chop it up!

I've changed my mind. The 2 species system is broken. I'm changing party affiliation and voting 3rd party. Crabapple for the win!

Locust. Both are HARD hardwoods but Hickory is stubborn and more stringy than Locust. Not like Elm stringy, but not the most pleasant thing to hand split either.

Both are victims of the two recent storms here. Lately its been BL in terms of opportunity.

I’m glad to see Brads addiction is getting better. At least he’s considering other types of wood again. It appears he’s through the worst of it. :woodsign:

Leave that hickory be, it's way to hard to split.

Takes longer to season, too (in my area, at least).

IME fresh cut hickory splits pretty easy with minimal stringiness. Knot/gnarls are another story of course. The last time i got hickory was in April. Split it right away and no problems. Had a bunch of hickory rounds (shag, pignut & bitternut) from last Fall that i split late Winter. Those were another story. If hickory wins it'll get split right away.
