So I wound up picking up a 22 ton Huskee splitter from eBay. Thing is doing a great job so far. I can't believe how much more efficient I am. However, the other day I see this screw/washer combo part there laying on the beam and I see the empty screw hole shown below. It looked obvious so I screwed it back in and called Speeco to try and get more information. A couple days go past with no callback. Next thing, the screw has fallen out again and now I can't find it. I call them back and get someone. He says I should be OK but to get to a hardware store and find a screw with matching threads to put in there. So, I WILL do that but, what is this thing? I don't see it on any parts list in the manual and I don't see any fluid near the hole or anything. The guy said it held a seal in place or something. Thoughts? TIA.

That would have been my guess was that it helps lock the end cap and maybe the snap ring in place. Never seen that before, doubt it was added after the factory though...

Yeah it appears to be a "lock" so that the seal cover retainer doohickey can't back off.

I'd just put some blue threadlock on it when you get a new one from the hardware store.

I'm guessing 3/8- 16 thread?? Unless my scale is off. You know about how long the bolt was, so go off of that as reference.

It could be...but a 3/8" screw with a phillips drive head would be an unusual screw...my guess would be 1/4"...probably NC (20)

I noticed that bolt missing one day while splitting, I finished the day without it. When I got home, I put a 1/4" 20 with a drop of blue loctite on it and it has been there ever since.

The bolt and washer is there to prevent the front cap from being accidently pushed in exposing the lock wire that retains the cap. Any bolt that fits will work just have to determine if SAE or Metric.

Thanks. I have to admit, I'm not 100% sure I follow. My buddy came over with a metal detector. We found the screw and the flat washer but not that thicker washer(?) that goes in between the flat washer and the end of the cap(?) there. I got a few regular flat washers to stack...and loctite. Drives me nuts that this thing brought me to a grinding halt.

So, on the plus side, used a couple small washers to replace the thicker one and everything's been fine. Even found the missing part. Then, earlier in the week, won't start. Never had a problem. Gas is fresh and everything but it just won't turn over. I'm thinking, try a new spark plug?

Check the old plug first. Also, while the plus is out, pull it over 10-20 times. You may have a swigof bad gas or water. Also check the spark on the plug while pulling it over with the ignition on. Set the plug on the plug hole and see if it Sparks well.

Yes. Pull it over several times that way.

Yeah. The oil looks good. I'll revisit this this morning.

So, trying to start it with no plug seemed to have no net gain. Called the local auto place and they had the plug in stock. Picked one up, some oil I'd need anyway and a bit of Seafoam additive just in case. I hit it with everything. Started on the second pull. Back i action.
