I bought this hatchet head that has a single edge for trimming the small stubs from the rounds I cut up before splitting. It is about 2 lbs which good for my arm and hand strength. I had a small piece of ash here so I cut it down and used it for a handle. I also crossed filed the handle for a better grip. Just thought I share a pic.
Got one just like it my Father had Yeaaaaaaaaaaars ago! Has the original handle on it. Neat, haven't seen another till now.
Yes it is like a hewing axe. There is a stamp on it and will have to go look at it. I cut about 20 to 25 lodge pole pine up in the mountains every year and I like having a hatchet to knock off the stubs from dead limbs. The big stuff I will cut with my saw but small stuff is faster with a hatchet.
Mag Craft, here's the one my father left me when he passed , It was made by True Temper. The only thing I do know is he/we had this since I was a child! 50 odd years ago.
Actually no I haven't used it. It kinda hangs on the peg board. I just never think of it when I have the Fiskars and an Estwing to use. It seems to be a memory of sorts. My Father used it all the time when we would go wood hunting! I usually cut the trees and he would limb them with that! I can say it has had many years of use from him... and I really don't know how old it is but I do know it's at least 50+ years old.
Nice Broadaxe...I would nearly kill for one. When I built the timbers for my house I wanted the hand-hewn look, so I figured the best way to get the look is to replicate the method. I did not have a broad axe though, so the work was a lot harder!
The True Temper line was made by Kelly axe post 1949. Mann Edge made some True Temper. Edit: I found some information that True Temper may have been made back as far as 1930 under a different company. Lots of info out there and I'll stop at this. I have a Keen Kutter hewing made by Kelly also. I really like the looks of them.
