Got paid $71 clams at the scrap yard for a bunch of old extension cords, one aluminum wheel from my MINI that is bent beyond repair (cost me $350 Q@$(@*^#&(), a few pieces of copper, a 250' roll of 12/3 bx, and 2 aluminum old levels that had damage to the bubbles......

So now that axe was $102. A few less clams.

This thing is a beast. All the weight is in the head. You can't balance it on your finger on the handle at all.

The handle is a bit flatter than the x27 and is made of beech. I sanded it lightly and put a coat of Tried & True Danish Oil (which is their 100% polymerized linseed oil).

It split through some knotty cherry rounds I could not even start splitting with the x27. It has a lot of heft to it and it didn't take me long to get used to the thinner handle.

The handle is also 6" shorter. The x27 is 36" and this is 30". I find it easy to control.

I did manage to chip the edge on my first strike. Didn't hit a nail but maybe I hit a small pebble or rock or something in my tire chopping block. That was annoying but this splitting maul comes razor sharp and completely polished. There was also a coating that I took off with some mineral spirits and steel wool on the head that was there I'm sure to prevent rust during transport.

I am extremely please with it and highly suggest those of you who hand split to consider it. I think it's so cool that the handle doesn't require a wedge to secure the head.

(Took these pics before I took the coating off)

This axe is really something else. Short handle (30") makes it easier to control. This more accurate. All head heavy so less power needed to swing it. Super slim profile which then widens out at the eye to really bite into the wood and then split it.

This is a great compliment to the Fiskars x27.

Having spent the earlier part of the afternoon on the splitter, splitting by hand is where my heart is at.

Tried the Hachas Juaregi axe on some cherry that has been in round form for over 2 years. Not having it.

Whipped out the x27. Was able to split a few rounds but still was tough.

Had to resort to the ol' wedge and sledge for most of them. When it's twisty grain like that, unpleasant to do by hand. Once split in half then I was able to use the x27.

x27 seems to get stuck less often than the Hachas Juaregi since the HJ has such a sharp edge and such a thin profile and such a long blade.
