About two weeks ago I felled an old, knarly, twisted and damaged wild apple tree in our woods. It was pretty big as far as wild Apple trees go, at least for around here. I sectioned it up and split it today. I was surprised at how stringy it was as I was splitting it. And I really enjoyed the fragrance and color of the wood as I was splitting it.

I got more wood from that old apple tree than I expected I would. I'm looking forward to burning it down the road when it's dry. This is the first Apple I've ever split and I'm going to look for more in the future. I hear it burns well too.

    A good day overall.

I've split my fair share of apple (I live in orchard country). Orchard trees that have been pruned for their entire life split about as bad as elm.

My dad just took one down in his yard that was a left over from an old orchard. It was also large for an apple tree, considering it was probably 50-60 years old. He left the trunk standing for me to take down, I'll have a better idea on the age when I do that.

I'm in the same boat never burned any but hear/read it pretty darn good.

Guy i know around here swears by apple. He saves all the splitter type splinters and small pieces. He then wraps up a small bundle in aluminum foil, and take a tooth pick and pokes holes in the foil. He then just tosses the whole thing into the bottom of his grill before cooking and he says it makes meats taste great. He said the twigs from the tree work best. When i took down an apple, he got a pick up load of small twigs from about the size of your little finger if not smaller. I will confess, i have not personally tried it yet however.

I've used apple in our smoker and love the flavor. Matter of fact, I think I'll throw some chips on our grill this evening for our dinner. Never burned in our stove for heat though.

I rarely have pictures of my endeavors cause I never have my phone with me when I'm working, probably should though.

I did some long overdue pruning this spring so I also have some apple. I was surprised at how nicely a 12 inch round split with my Fiskars.

I know of an apply tree that was an old mature tree when I was a little kid. That tree is still there alive and well. It has been severely trimmed several times, but every year it comes back and fruits. I don't know what is the name of the apple but they make good applesauce.

My son, age 10, was out helping me with wood all weekend. I took a small pallet and put some sides on it and told him it was a "VIP pallet". Of course, he had to know why. We stacked it full of apple logs and branches and I told him it was going to be for the BBQ this summer. I don't waste apple in the wood boiler. I save everything down to about an inch in diameter. The trunk of one tree was pretty rotten though, so I put that in with the regular firewood. Don't want burnt rot in my BBQ.

All day long I heard "Dad are you gonna build another VIP pallet for anything else?". LOL
