We have weather rocks around here, same principle. Big 20 pound rock hanging from a chain on a tripod. If rock is moving= windy. If rock is white= snowing. If rock is wet= raining......... and so on.
Would not enjoy living where it is windy like that! Rode our bikes across S D coming back from Sturgis one year in the 90's through a sustained wind from the south. Actually had a lean on the bike as we were going east!!
Back in my biker days I remember having to anticipate on windy days when I would get to a farm yard or tree row to quit my compensation lean so I wouldn't wipe out. Riding in a gentle ND 40 mph cross wind sucks!
My last time crewing on RAAM we hit some terrible winds in Kansas. Guys were really leaning. But what made it even worse is that the temperature was over 100 degrees! I recall one spot where we saw a lot of chaff and dust blowing across the road. Then we saw some combines in the distance; well over a mile away. Nasty day it was and we had to take one of the racers to the hospital that night as he was dehydrated but the records show he drank way over what he normally would drink. Still got him. I remember getting to him as he stopped and I grabbed him before he fell. Nasty day it was...
The day my son got married in Dodge City it was 105 with about 20-25 mph winds! Felt just like a blast furnace. Gary
1/2 week after being evacuted for HighPark wild fires, temp was 105*, Rh 4%, and much higher temps in the areas near active burning . We were in WWW's dilapidated travel trailer he used for hunting, bought a portable a/c and vented through the cooktop vent. Could not here a thing in the trailer with it running but atleast we, lil one, and dogs were cool.
