A local orchard is selling off a small section of apple trees. They have popped the trees out of the ground, and are allowing folks in to cut what they want. It's $50 a truckload. I spoke with one of the family members yesterday and he said to cut and fill up my truck and come over to their office and pay them. He said they probably won't even charge me the whole $50! So I'm going to stack the truck bed heaped high in the middle. Should be at least 1/2 cord hopefully for $30-$40. I'll probably get at least 2-3 loads maybe more. Hickory guy is still trying to sell his 1/2 cord of geeen wood for $150 and not getting much response from the white oak guy so I'm moving on. I'll get at least 3 loads of the apple hopefully for $100 or so and that will give me 1-1/2 cords of good burning/smelling firewood to burn in a couple winters. Sorry so long winded.
That's great, you'll be happy with it. It dries pretty fast. Not the most regularly shaped wood to stack, though.
You have a gold mine of firewood there; get all you can ( or drive it Downeast ? ). Apple trees in these Maine woods are smaller, diseased, surrounded by spruce and fir. We tried opening them up when the land was bought but the Apple trees were long gone. High BTUs, and the odor is so fine you want to snort it.
I'm thankful for this thread. It reminded me that I have to get 2 large overgrown apple trees on some friends land that blew over last fall.
My F-150 with 6.5' bed will be big enough, it's only about 15-20 miles away! I have 4' sideboards for it, but I think the orchard folks would frown on me using them. Also I won't need to worry about irregular pieces Midwinter because there are so many trees I'll be cutting only the straight wood!
I finally made it to the orchard this morning at 10:30. I was there until 4;30 when I ran out of steam. I got a really nice load of apple wood, I think about 1/2 cord. I only took the straight sections ranging in size from 3-4" up to the largest trunk pieces which are maybe 12-14". Cut everything to about 16". I have some pictures as soon as I can figure out how to upload them I will. I had to take a 1 hr. break right in the middle of cutting, more to come on that in another post.
Yeah but your shipping cost would be WAY too high! I'm going to try and get back for another load on a dry day in the next week or so. It may be all gone by then but I'm not about to spend all day in the rain cutting wood. Call me a sissy but I'm way too old for that. I'll be 67 on March 31st!
Dang! Some of our local orchards wanted $10 per truck. When I started cutting firewood, Motts sold permits for $1, cut all you want. It was basically to get you to sign their waiver. Apple is excellent firewood. You'll love it if you haven't already burned some. Save a bunch for the smoker!
As the kids say : " T.M.I." A very Happy Birthday JJP old man. How old ? My, you're about to break the mortal coil. So...kindly place that apple wood in your will for me ?
Dumf, we just bought this home last year. I told my wife we lived in our previous house for 30 years, and I plan on living in this house for 30 years also! So this apple wood will be burned or smoked way before I'm gone.
JJP in Ohio if you throw an @ in front of name it highlights name and throws an alert enjoy that apple wood buddy It’s one of my favorites because in coaling stage it burns blue and green really pretty in glass wood stove
Thanks Canadian border VT for the tip! I'm sure those apple wood coals will also look good in our open fireplace. It may be ready to burn next winter if we're lucky.
