Cold day here with a good wind. Had the sweatshirt on all day. First for that this season. Almost needed the ski cap. Ice in the PU bed too. Cut these white oak and hickory rounds Wednesday (more Asplundh wood) and split them this afternoon. I forgot how much more i enjoy splitting when its cold out. Been since March.
Kinda nice not to be covered with sweat, but hands started to chap. Fair trade off i guess.
They had to be partly frozen as they popped rather easily with Isocore and Fiskars. Face cord split in an hour. If it was August i wouldve done half that in two hours! IMG_1279.JPG IMG_1280.JPG

I too find rounds split better when it down around freezing. Noy to mention I don't have to worry about getting over heated.

Love splitting this time of year - good workout, no bugs, and not drenched with sweat when I’m done.

buZZsaw BRAD the wood you are splitting now. Will that go towards next year home fires or for selling?

Yes, that's why I wait to do any firewood work unless I have to, until it's cold out. I hate sweating.

Both. Some will go two years...oak/hickory. I was never really a "sorter by species" type but since ive been a member i have started to keep em separated.

Yeah Brad. It is much more fun working with firewood when it is not hot outside. I'll get started soon; maybe within the next couple of weeks but for sure after Thanksgiving.

It was invigorating and i felt so alive! I love cold sunny days with dry frozen ground maybe mid 20's.
I know youve been hunting, but have you worked on any of that wood across the street from your "is this a scrounge" thread? I know you had your hands full with that enormous white oak from the GTG.

Just brought a little bit home that one day. Probably will get started again on that by December 1 if possible. Still have some splitting to do on that big oak too. Rifle season begins this coming Friday and runs for 2 weeks so not much woods work will be done during that time. However, I could do some splitting and stacking right on our place. There is lots of work to be done; energy is needed!

It was, sort of. If you look back in my threads i had got permission to cut what i wanted from there back in April see my thread
    This Score Could be Epic!
I ended up cutting ten PU fulls from it over two months and posted threads about each one. I guessed 50 PU fulls of wood couldve been had total. I hesitated on starting and weather got too warm. Didnt go there over the Summer. Went back in September and it was gone.
An old grist mill restaurant 5 minutes from me is being restored and this was some wood from there.

Just went back and looked. That’s amazing! Good hardwood like that where I live goes for 500-700 a cord, split.

WOW!!! thats amazing. I take for granted its mostly hardwood around here. Burning softwoods is mostly frowned upon.
Sold half cord of red maple delivered for $140 plus an extra $20 for extended mileage this afternoon.
