Was looking to see how long us fisher guys have been burning and heating with a Fisher...not how old the stove is. I have been using min for the 4th winter in my new place...couldn't be happier! I got the Baby Bear for a great price in great condition. I did give it a quick sand and a new coat of black satin heat paint, and replaced one fire brick - bought enough fire brick to replace them all and a little bit more, they were an excellent price from the supply house that told me 'no one buys these, we can't give them away', they didn't give them to me, but $1.75 each for the real McCoy was good to me. I truly believe this stove will be in service for at least another 25 years for me - pretty sure I don't have that many years left though. So....how long have you been heating with a Fisher???
Well, this story is 2 fold. My Mother and Father had one of the first Fishers that hit the area here in 1975 in the house, That would make me 13 years old then. We had a Grandpa Bear that "Blew us out of the house"!!! It was so dam hot. I found a Grandma Bear in 1980, and my Father agreed it was "killer" hot in the house durning the winter and we couldn't burn it like it should be. So we sold the Grandpa and installed the Grandma. Even now, it's border line "hot". I/we could have installed a Papa Bear and that would have even been fine. Anyway, all in all, we've had a Fisher here since 1975, 44 years! And the Grandma I have here now has been in 39 years. We love it/her! Currently 82º in the house...
How many square feet, Dave? Is the Grandma rear vent or top? I’m thinking top, but I may not remember.
Mines top and "not including" my addition which I have a Natural gas "wood stove", I'm heating about 1400+ sq ft. It heats it easy! I very well could have put a Papa bear in here but at the time, the deal/price was right on this stove so I grabbed it. It was nearly new, the previous owner didn't like the smell of a "burb" so they took it out and put in a gas stove.
I have a All Nighter, a fischer competitor from back then. I've used it for 7 going on 8 years now, since I bought the house. Had some people interested in buying my house that didn't want a woodstove and i said than it's going with me. Unfortunately that deal feel through.
I have a Buddy, I helped him install his "Big Moe" all Nighter! Yes, they are a cooker!!! Nice stoves and heavy also! There were many Fisher copies, but that was because "they worked"! And it's simplistic design is what makes them and all those other stoves attractable in the sales market then. I still have an old friend of the family who has been burning a "Kodiak", Alaska stove works for the last 45 years. That thing is a monster and it will cook you out...
No Fisher but my Nashua has a special place in my heart, in the shop now but wish i would have left it in the house. Bought it new in 1980 for 940 dollars, its a heat monster.
I'm going on my third season with my Fisher Insert. I'm very glad that I picked up a Fisher. Two things turned me onto Fisher. One was an older gentleman I've known for quite awhile and whose opinion I respect. He said Fisher was one of the best stoves during their time. The other thing that turned me onto Fisher, was stumbling upon this site (FHC) while researching Fisher wood stoves. I was probably reading comments posted by WeldrDave and/or Coaly. Thanks guys! I learned a lot from everyone here at FHC.
I've had my mama bear in the shop for 5years now and love it wouldn't trade it for a new stove for nothing. Also going on 5years on my fisher spin off timberline insert in my basement heats my whole house dam well. Fisher's and the knock off's I will always be fond of.
I will see what I can do, been really busy this last couple of weeks with contractors doing some work at my house.
I have a poppa in my shop. I used it in the old house a couple years before switching it out for a Cawley lemay 600 which was then replaced with a regency. The Fisher was by far my least favorite for heating a house. It works good in my shop where I want lots of BTUs in a hurry but no way would I ever go back to the inefficiency of a Fisher or similar for heating my house.
Same with me. I just found and fixed up a fisher insert. It will be replacing a set of ventless lp gas logs. I hope it’s not too much stove for our 950 sq ft story and a half cabin. But I have admired those stoves from the first time they were made but could never afford one until now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
