Hello out there, New to the Forum. I have a Fisher Baby Bear, I have never heard of a 'factory' Fire Screen for them...Was it an option? If not then have any of you heard of anyone making their own? Thanks.
First, "welcome to the forum shack!!! To answer you, they do not exist! Only the fireplace models "double door" had screens. I have two Baby bears and neither one has a screen. "Could you make one"?, I'm sure someone has but not production. They were not the stove for watching the fire, they were a basic great little heating stove. If Coaly comes around, he may answer you in more depth, he is the Great Master of Fisher knowledge , I just happen to know a few things! But I think my answer is on point, "I've" never seen or heard of one.
No, only the Fireplace Series with double doors have screens for open door burning. They are not radiant heaters in Fireplace Mode. First, you would need a flue damper to control the fire with door open and screen in place. Most of your heat is going to go up the chimney, so you slowly close damper until smoke starts to roll in at top. Then open slightly to take advantage of the little heat you can get. The only advantage making your own screen is if your stove is in a cabin not used full time where there is no electric or you get there and have damp wood to start fires. The open door allows easier starting and some light at night if needed. I use a Mama Bear in my off grid cabin since the stove top area is larger for cooking than the Fireplace Series. The temperature drop of the radiating surfaces of the stove isn't worth the fire viewing capability. You also loose the radiation from the cast iron door (the reason they use cast doors) since the heat gain from direct radiation from flames is minimal with a smaller opening than double doors. Combustion air consumption is also much greater with doors open causing more leakage into home. They are a efficient heater designed to keep the firebox hotter by radiating heat back into the firebox with firebrick which also reduces smoke particles. It should be used as designed. The efficiency of a Fireplace Series is less than the 6 inch vented Bear Series since the double door full size stoves use 8 inch outlets to prevent smoke roll in. The model you need for the same output as the Baby Bear to view the fire is a glass door Honey Bear. They were made in two door model as well as one larger single door. (Anyone looking for a single door down south will not find one since Fisher Stoves South East in GA only made the double doors) They were also available with optional legs or pedestal (called Convertible Model) and have outside air intake for mobile home UL approval. A blower was available for the bottom rear to blow up the back and out the curl over the top. Stoves were available in Metallic Brown, Satin Black or "Brass and Glass". They also have inserts made of cast iron to close the glass opening in case of breakage. Blowers in black and brown as well as cast plates are still in stock. (a shameless plug) This is why Fisher was the top of the line and Baby was made for simplicity and efficient heating.
Cold If you get skiing this year stop by to see the lighted Fisher Authorized Dealer signI found in Canada!
Yeah it is, I just added the newest addition to my last post; Just bought the house with 2 acres next to us for another rental so I have plenty of standing dead to use this winter. It will be ready in about a month. (the wood, not the house) Good place for you and the family to stay over. It came with 4 stoves........ as if I need more. 2 connected..... No Fisher, but one is a brand new secondary burn Certified. One Papa Bear size Vestal, one huge Grandpa Bear style Marsal, and one homemade by a local welder up the road that you would really appreciate. Super cheap, I need them gone. I only allow pellet and coal in my rentals. Installing a mini-split heat pump.
! Amen! We would love to get back up that way! We've got a couple things going on and I retired, "officially" as of 01 Sept. So I'm Unemployed for now. I have a few VA things to go through because my back is sooooo screwed up and a few other things so hoping I get it all squared away by spring.
Thank you for the Info! What you say makes perfect sense, I really miss seeing a fire though. Here is a pic of the Baby Bear tag on the back..not sure how well it will come out.
If it's any consolation, I burn and have been burning a Grandma here since 1980 and I've only used the screen "maybe" a half dozen times, Only if company is over and the wife wants the ambiance. Other than that, "screw it" I'm all about the heat!!!
Here's an older one I restored... The pipe in the back was cracked all the way around it, I re welded it like new. I added some side 1" flat bar of the top so things didn't get knocked off.. It had in the past...
Very nice touch with the flat bar. Mine came with a home made 'soup warmer' that clamps on the the top plate...still need to prep and paint that. I wanted a Fisher because of quality of construction and they do what they are supposed to do very well. It easily heats my 900 sq ft place even on 18 degree nights so far. I love it!
Yup! That'll do the trick! Very nice! The flat bar idea was because of kids and dogs!!! Things were getting bumped, toy balls hitting stuff and flying off etc... I put a front lip on my Grandma to help when we cook on her. spillage and stuff... If you look close you'll see it, this is pics right after I refinished her, she was 10 years over due for a face lift.
Nice stove an nice install! As you've seen, I'm a new to the Fisher world too and I'm on high pace to have a baby bear installed in my 24x24 garage. I spend a lot of time out there and propane/kerosine heater fumes are getting real old real fast..... not to mention the cost in fuel and the hassle. Glad to see that it's working so well for you.
Yes. I actually started out to run a bead of 6011 but only had some 5/32. I wasn't gonna drive over to the Shipfitters shop and grab some so I just flipped on the Shopmaster and Tigged her up.
I've had about 12 Fishers, currently have 3 and never seen a Baby bear screen unless it was custom made. If you know of one that is factory, Please snap a pic. Coaly has many and collects Fishers since they were made, I think he'd have came across one if anyone has... Marty treadaway , Welcome to FHC! Nice to have you here.
