:picard: kiln dried is ready.. Seasoned means 1 season split as in 3 months.. or needs many more seasons to be dry.. I used to do this split in spring and burn in fall.

Yep, that's the way it was done. Common wisdom was Winter cut, spring split & burn next Fall/Winter. If you did that you were considered an ambitious burner cause you didn't wait till Fall to cut this winter's wood.

Farmers Almanac is calling for a snowy cold winter...so naturally it will be dry and warm. That periodical never gets it right!

I have always found that firewood is based upon the following year. After lasts years 3 weeks of sub-zero cold, heat pumps proved they are not enough, firewood dealers stock depleted, and so people are buying more firewood.

But the same sources that cited last year there was a "shortage" never saw the firewood dealers I saw, because their yards were teeming with "dry" firewood.

I had a logger cut off me one time and said he needed some firewood for his daughter before it was too close to winter to "dry". It was September, and yes she planned on burning it that winter.

Myself, I like to cut in the winter for next winters firewood, but right now I got about a 30 year plan going.

If a news outlet headline reported "everything is fine, stock piles are up" nobody would read the story.

Doom and gloom stories are better for business...just watch the weather channel...
They are using words like biblical and record, worst in history, to keep people glued to their channel.

I have bought some firewood from AW Allen years back. Good people. There prices are high in my opinion but you do get a full cord . My brother is in the logging business and told me that pulp prices are up also so that's where most of his logs are going also. I got 8 cord of green oak and paid $200 a cord. I should have two cord of green ash coming for 150 a cord if it works out. I didn't have money to get wood a head so Im stuck with green this winter. I also agree with what you guys are saying and don't believe everything I hear,

For some of you folks who have to buy or just can't cut try this little suggestion. The next time your driving somewhere and you see a tree guy/surgeon, stop and chat and ask him what or where he or she is getting rid of their wood.
Many take it to the dump and have that incorporated in their price when pricing the job. Let them know you'll take anything they would like to give away! I have three friends in the business and they have difficulty giving it away sometimes! o_O
Now, I understand here is different than some places and many here do not burn wood. Usually they give it to campgrounds to sell and so on. Also, a case of Beer goes a long way for some guys! My point is, get chummy with some tree folks and you may find a "silver maple lining" in your future  . That was funny....

    Always extreme forecast out there
    severe winter ,
    wet & flood in spring,
    Hot summer,
    Stormy fall.

Now with 24/7 news & weather
    Drama sells,
    Ratings = $$

    Headlines:
“Firewood Hoarder’s storing massive amounts of firewood is a sign of severe winter”
    We hope :)

The worst thing is, I have about 30 cord sitting where people can see it...

One guy has asked (3) times if he can get it for firewood. Pretty bold considering his brother in law is the one that logged it, left the wood, and then never paid me for the 75 truck loads of wood he cut. Yeah sure, I'll just give it to you free. (You have to admit, that is one big hiney wipe there).

Many have asked to buy it, but the worst guy was an old drunk that no one likes. He stops in and makes small talk, then says, "I'd like to buy that firewood off you " I say, "Well sorry, it is not for sale". So then he gets all disgusted and says, "Well then I did not want it anyway", and off he goes.

I am not a big fan of Ash, but it burns decent right off the stump in a pinch.

There is more to it than that honestly. I cannot fault a man for what his brother-in-law does. Heck I have never touched drugs whatsoever, but my brother-in-law died of a drug overdose, so I understand individuality, and not assuming someone is like another of the same family. But my brother works at the same plant as this guy, and on the first day on the job he asked if my brother was the same -ahole as the rest of his family".

That was pretty harsh considering he was THE ONLY guy I allowed to hunt on my property for years. They are not my deer granted; and I have nothing against hunting or hunters, but I thought giving him exclusive rights to hundreds of private hunting ground was pretty generous. Then to find out he thinks I am an "ahole"...then asks for free firewood his brother-in-law cut...and ripped me off of $11,000, was all too much.
