I have always liked just rocking up a big ring. This is about 4' across inside the rocks.

Right where I want to be.
Mine is similar to Stinny's, but 6' ID.
    Smaller rocks.
Would be fairly easy to add a section for cooking with a rack.
Nothing special. The PO had this one, but it was smaller. I just dug down a little deeper, after putting the rocks/stones where I wanted. I filled a couple low areas with the stuff I dug out.
Every couple years, I dig out the ashes.

I cooked on a tripod recently and wow, I really liked it! That I conjunction with the above ground pit pictured above would be pretty sweet.

Have seen a couple HD swing arm set-ups that are cool... arm swings a pot or grill out over the fire, then back beside a small tray table. I'd rig that up if I did a lot of grilling over a firepit for sure.

It was a 8 or 10" Dutch oven. If the pavers are real stone, maybe? I would just get field rocks.

Here is the one I built in a previous backyard, when I was living the subdivision life.

L-32 Multi-Level Campfire Ring Pilot rock is the manufacturer. I have personally used one of these camping and they are great. Every time we camp at this particular place we always cook over the fire.

Do you plan on cooking over it? If so, look up keyhole fire pits. This gives you the ability to control the heat underneath your cook utensils.

Scotty has a great "keyhole" shaped one.
Have a good fire & cook at the same time on the narrow end

Doesn't everyone? All my snow goes in front of the house on a 10' wide strip between the road and fence. Once that fills up I bring all the snow up the driveway, then up the side of the house, and push it to the back corner of the yard. Total PITA, but still easier than my snowblower.

I built our sunken keyhole pit many years ago, and it's been used very hard. It works wonderfully for both kettle and grill cooking. Here's a few pics....
