Fire pit grate idea's

    Hi all,

    I'm coming home from work today and it was trash day so I make my usual sweep through the neighborhood streets looking for reusable goodies. :)
    I see these grates, and ask the man at the house if I can have them. He say's sure take them away… He saw junk :confused:…. I saw "chrome" plated BBQ fire pit grates!!!!:whistle::cool::yes::eek::whistle: Oh yea, these will be used in the near future:dex:

    A buddy of mine has a set like that. He mounted one on a rod with a little reinforcment and has a swing out fire pit grill.

    jetjr and WeldrDave,
    My buddy also used a solid steel rod that we drove into the ground next to the firepit, then the corner sleeve had a wing nut thread into it and we swing the grate on and off the fire and lower and raise as needed. Our boys were in scouts together and we used it on many of our camping trips. Worked great.
    Nice score.

    I haven't paid much attention to my buddies, but i do know he ran it through a good size fire before using it.

    Yep, I remember Fran saying that he put it in a good fire right out of the gate. It did not appear to have anything flaking off when we used it. Fran said chrome is actually a pretty soft metal and burns easily.

    I would ask myself one question: Have I ever seen a chrome plated grill on any barbeque before? I personally have not, which would make me leery.

    When you get a brand new Weber Grill isn't that grate chrome? I don't think it is stainless. Maybe those shelf racks are stainless. Come to think of it, maybe my buddy Fran had a stainless steel grate.
    Hell, I owe Fran a call. I'll call him tonight to see how retirement is treating him and ask him. He was a heavy equipment welder for a long time. Last saw him at his mentor Charlie's funeral in January haven't talked to him since.

    That's a good idea. They have those at all of the chicken B-BQ feeds that many fire depts do to raise money. Pretty slick.
