After searching for a Long time . I found a shop in Fairbanks that sells these. I already have and use the 12" model . But it's not so good for splits and smaller wood 6" dia and smaller. The 8" model works GREAT just got it this afternoon and already put it to use. $52.00 Worth every penny.
Great tools ! I have three pairs ; one modified that now has 4 points for use at the splitter and 2 regular for moving logs. really makes life easier.
Those really shine and makes work easier, make gloves last longer and your hands do not get as cold in winter. I too recently bought one of the small ones and they work very good on splits. One does have to bend more as they don't reach as far but still worth the dollars. I have bought several of the log tongs off of amazon and they come from England. The price varies sometimes and I've bought from $42.00 and up.
I had never owned any until last years FHC secret gifted me with a pair. They work great...when i remember to use them or take them with me.
No, Rod's Saw Shop. I got my 572 from the Woodway. John went above and beyond getting it just the way I wanted . With the Western, fullwrap AND heated handlebars . Falling dogs and snow kit. BUT, it's good to be on first name basis with all the saw shops in the area.
Because I grew up logging and loading mostly 4' wood. With pulp hooks. A pulp hook is my automatic go to wood handling tool. But, I got interested in the hand tongs after working with a guy from Wisconsin building log homes. He used a hand tongs. They were Great for placing logs on the flats. Then I saw people using them here on FHC. So I got a 12" model. I use it all the time . Love it. It's Not a replacement for a pulp hook. But better for certain things. Same with a pickaroon. The Best tool for certain things. For other things nope.
Works great for use at the splitter , able to hold smaller logs centered on the 4 way wedge without having to worry about balancing the log on just two points. No good for moving logs with them now ( well I haven't tried after the modification ) but I have two more pairs for that. Great tools for sure !
Me personally , I'd say just buy them. Two pairs if you can ! Two makes it really easy to carry a log in each hand and they can be used as a pair carrying long logs as well. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Same here ! Our European brethren have it figured out tho with carrying/moving poles tho. That funny little inline hook that you see in saw shops some times is the just right companion for poles . When combined with the tongs. It's , the little inline hook is kinda useless as a stand alone general purpose hook. But with a hand tong , it's just right. You see them being used in some of those European short bar you tube vids.
Are you talking about a pike pole? 1-1/2 I could see that and tongs working well. I’ll have to find one of the videos. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No. Tho I've moved a good amount of firewood with pikepoles. In Southeast Alaska I sold firewood sometimes. Often I would be bucking and splitting on the beach. Sometimes I wouldn't have my time figured just right and the tide would catch me. So I would have lots of splits floating out in the chuck or bay. Ide run out in my skiff and pew the splits onboard with a pike pole. I use pike poles for plenty of other things also. The little European inline hooks I'm talking about are a small hand tool. IMHO only useful for handling poles with a set of hand tongs. I'm a tool guy. If it's a tool that I can use to make life and work better, I get it ! I do not have one of these inline hooks. I don't see me going and buying one anytime soon.
