Is anyone using 13/64 on 3/8? I just bought a box of Pferds in 13/64 and a box of 11/64 for 3/8 lowpro. I have always used 5/32, 3/16 & 7/32 for my chains, so these are new territory for me. Interested to see the difference. Any input from FHC members on this?
When I was using round, I did use the 13/64 cutter in my Timberline (on Stihl chain). After about 2/3-3/4 back, I’d switch to the 7/32. I know Stihl chain calls for the 13 and Oregon is 7. It was needed to get the right profile with that jig. I never used a 13 round file, always used the 7/32 when hand filing.
I use the 13/64 with Stihl.7/32 with Oregon.I'm just starting to use a Pferd 3/16 on my 325 chains. How do you like yours?
I’ve always used 7/32 on 3/8 chain, 3/16 on .325 and 5/32 on 3/8lp and 1/4”. I know the Stihl 3/8 calls for the 13/64 but I’ve used the 7/32 just fine. The first sharpening or so takes a touch more effort to “open up” the Stihl chain to the 7/32 file but they all seem to run fine.
Oregon/husky. Love Pferd files. I prefer the classic (more aggressive) vs the newer cut. I'm just experimenting. I have not been happy with the 5/32 file on the pico/lowpro. 7/32 has done fine on 3/8 for me, just trying something new. I get very good pricing on files, so not out much if I don't like them. I always free hand file...or at least 90% of the time.
I end up with too much hook about halfway down the chain. I would chalk it up to my filing, but I do not have this issue with 3/16 on my .325 chains. Hoping the step up will give me similar results I get there. Not sure what to expect on the 3/8 change...maybe I won't even notice?
