It appears that years ago it got bent by ice/snow/wind and a lateral branch assumed central leader dominance. You can see the nub left from the old leader.
Yes, I’ve had my eye on it for a while formulating a plan. The trunk bend and the one sided canopy weighted opposite the bend had my turd cutter tightened up. I was banging wedges that didn’t want to budge and my house was in the target zone. That was unnerving for a one man felling crew.
I'm surprised you are cutting oak during the summer. You guys don't have oak wilt? Here in Wisconsin, we don't cut live oak from about April thru end of September. My forester said its probably ok to start cutting in August, but I wait until we have at least one heavy frost to kill the bugs.

I don’t believe it’s old enough. Let’s say it’s 100yrs old. That means it was made in 1923. Old RJR and the Industrial Revolution already had a foothold in the area. I don’t think the Cherokee were running war parties on the cigarette factories, or lost among the tobacco farms. It sure looks similar to that picture though. The eastern seaboard would have also been clear cut twice by 1923.
Very nice job on that tree. It didn't look that big in the pics. Wish we were closer, we have a 32" bar you could have used. I did cut that 41" post oak with the 28" earlier this year...
Thank You, I need to get a 32” 3/8 bar. I have a 30” .404 for the 084, but I sacrifice some saw control when using a heavy saw.
