Sometimes a well timed quote can help someone during a rough day, inspire someone or just make someone laugh. What are some of your favorite quotes (wood related or not) and possibly say why. My favorite is from Frank Herbert's book Dune. "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." It reminds me of inner strength we all have.
"Do. Or do not. There is no try." -Yoda “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” -Dr. Seuss But I only like the above quote if you temper it with this one: Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. -Abraham Lincoln
The one in my signature is one of my all time favorite quotes but here are a few others I like. "Life is hard. It's even harder when you're stupid." - John Wayne "The most terrifying words in the English language are "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."" -Ronald Reagan "Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions." _GK Chesterton
I have so many favorites I'd probably lock up the forum if I listed all of them. However, here are a few good ones: There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root. Thoreau. Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify. Simplify. Thoreau Build your castles in the air, that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them. Thoreau Why should we waste the best years of our lives earning money in order to enjoy a questionable freedom in the least valuable part. Thoreau. The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. They make themselves sick, that they might lay up something against a sick day. Their incessant anxiety and strain is a well-nigh incurable form of disease. It’s a fool’s life. Yet, it appears they honestly believe no choice is left. Thoreau No way of thinking or doing, however ancient, can be trusted without proof. What old people say you cannot do, you try and find you can. Thoreau. To maintain oneself on this earth is not a hardship, but a pastime, if one will live simply and wisely. Thoreau. It is some advantage to lead a primitive life, though in the midst of civilization, if only to learn what are the necessaries of life. Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts are not only dispensable, but positive hindrances. Thoreau. The cost of a thing is the amount of life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately, or in the long run. Most men are needlessly poor all their lives, because they think they must inhabit a home (and car) like their neighbors. Thoreau. If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to lead the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost. That is where they belong. Now, put the foundations under them. Thoreau. We are more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our room. No exertion of the legs can bring two minds much nearer to one another. Thoreau. There can be no very black melancholy to him who lives in the midst of nature and still has his senses.Thoreau. We live thick and in each other’s way and stumble over one another. I think we thus lose some respect for one another. Thoreau. Men frequently starve, not for want of necessaries, but for want of luxuries. Thoreau. We live thick and in each other's way, and stumble over one another. I think we thus lose some respect for one another. Thoreau A man is rich not in proportion to the number of things he can afford, but in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone. Thoreau Things are more easily acquired than gotten rid of. Thoreau
Here is one I used at my Daughters wedding. " To keep your marriage brimming, With love in the loving cup, Whenever you are wrong admit it, Whenever you are right shut up" Ogden Nash
In her older days my mom has now morphed that old saying into. " I like it" when reasoning why she does not so wise things. I've got a lot of quotes that I like though. "You'll get nothing and like it"
From much of what I've read and come to understand about Thoreau he was a an extremely self absorbed, reclusive, blowhard who didn't actually know much about people because he never bothered to get to know them but instead just assumed he was better than them. I've never understood the fascination with and admiration of Thoreau. Yes his rejection of the materialistic lifestyle is quite appealing, especially in 2016, and he is very quotable but a critical examination of the man himself and the life he led reveals him to to be somewhat of an anti social @!+**.
It's all mind over matter, with my mind it does not matter. Patience is a tree whose roots are very bitter but fruit is very sweet. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change , The courage to change the thing I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Panic and all your fears will come true.
Sorry but it will only let me like your comment once. It's easily deserving of at least 3-4 likes from a single fellow poster.
Well, yes, there are a few blowhards around no matter where you look. Also, sometimes it is better to listen to the message rather than pay too much attention to who is giving the message. Many times you miss the point when there is a good point to be taken.
"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" John Lennon . So true, as in they grow up so fast.
