I kinda feel like this is the hay equivalent to "free firewood, all you have to do is cut down the tree, cut it up and take the brush away!" LOL
Yeah, free alpapha is good. I was hoping that once we pull out some of our seasonal crops that we could so some alfalfa is one or two of our garden beds.
You can vacuum seal it like silage also. It will probably be more nutrients left in it that way also.
How much does a rabbit eat? I would think that a square bale of alfalfa would last a long time? Red clover is pretty hardy...might consider planting a little of that to get you through fall and early winter.
Not sure exactly how much they will have to eat over the winter but an actual bale has been ruled out. Just had an offer from a coworker, says he has an alfalfa field and I can have some of that. This guy is rarely true to his word but rumour is the field is actually his mom' and I work with her too so I guess I will have a talk with her when I see her again.
You can get a square bale of alfalfa on CL for $4-$6 (depending on how clean it is) this time of year. Prices usually go up the further into the winter you get.
They (Dad and the old lady) think it will take more than 10 square bails to make it through the winter and don't want to spend the money. I'm with them-- if we can dry what we usually feed them anyway for free I am all for it. Anything else is gravy.
