So I have this small axe head weighs about 2 1/4lbs. So instead of buying something from the big box store I decided to try a piece of elm. I have done some kindling and some splitting small rounds and so far so good. We will see how long it holds up but with the smaller axe head I am hoping it will do fine. 27" long
Hey thanks Brad. Just keeping busy in my retirement. I have another hatchet with a funky handle on it from a pallet I did quite a while ago. I think I will do a piece of elm for it too.
Well I was splitting some firewood the other day and hit the wood handle near the axe head. I am afraid it did not hold up very well. It is like the wood wants to shatter and not splintter. So I am in the process of making another handle from an old oak shelf that I had laying around here. I will have to glue to halves together to get enough width. I think it will do much better.
Update. I made a new oak handle for the axe and did away with the elm. It was just too brittle. The leather gaurd is from an old belt.
Heck if I know. It was just a piece of shelving that was laying around here not being used for anything. It did have a little bit of a red color to it when bare and planed down.
Looks great. Hope it holds up. Too bad about the elm one. What species of wood is that in the upper left stack in back..fresh cut? Caught my eye.
That is a bunch of Elm I got about 3 days ago. A rancher out here wanted to take out about 10 trees. He told me if I helped, I could load up my truck. I got 2 truck loads.
That’s a talent my father had. He carved out his own axe handles. I dont recall what species of wood he used. Unfortunately I did not inherit his skills at carving. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
