All the troubles with the king have me refocused on a higher quality stove for next season. Can anyone recommend a better stove than this one for the price?
    http://www.menards.com/main/heating...a-wood-stove-with-blower/p-1696718-c-6884.htm

Features we like-- flat top, hoping it will be hot enough to cook on. Large fire box. EPA certified. Looking for a stove With an easy to set damper that will still have enough coals in the morn to restart Upon reload. Is this what I need?

I'm with Dex on this one and if you don't want to spend a ton of money but are looking for quality go for the 30.
There is more than enough room to cook on the step top. I have seen a few 30's in person and I would venture to say the top even with the step is bigger than what you currently have.

Also, could you point me to the thread where you talk about the issues you have had with the King?

Yeah, took me a while to figure out this wasn't a Blaze King. Do you have a thread that talks about how big your home is and how much heat you need?

No, I don't. But it's a big old drafty house. Need a lot of heat.

As an owner of a big old drafty house, you might want to think about a wood/pellet add-on furnace/boiler or installing more than one stove.

No flat top. But there is 2 levels for cooking and by the looks of your stove now, you could stand to build a flat griddle to protect the stoves surface. Or just use either of the 2 levels. The 30 is a large stove, with a large top. Twenty some inches deep on top (not home to measure )

Dex, you got an infrared thermometer? I am curious about surface temps. Is there a big difference between the two levels?

Not when the stove is rocking. Is there a temperature difference? Sure. Is it a lot? Not really. But I do not cook on my stoves. So, you might have specific requirements.

Further back on the step top temps are at 420. I also have the blower on, so the temps will be off. Not sure if the back of the step top is more effected since it is closer to the blower.

The Drolet looks like a lot of stove for the money! Made in Canada with a lifetime warranty too.. Cooking shouldn't be a problem and overnight burns should be easy to achieve as well.. The reviews are also very good.. Sounds like a winner to me!

Hard to beat the price for the Drolet at Menards, some places are asking well over a 1,000 dollars for it.
