I'm looking to get a few files and this popped up PFERD Double Bevel Flat Chisel Bit Square Chisel Chainsaw Files (12-Pack) 17082 – Tfbvco Has anyone purchased from here? This seems like a "too good to be true" deal, and I want to bite, but I'm a little gunshy after a sour deal recently with a "bait and switch". The address given is a residence in the "burbs" of Tucson. Just curious as this price is pretty amazing...
I'd give it a try. You always have protection when using a credit card. I like these the best, behind the Vallorbe of course. Nothing comes close to Vallorbe and that makes them worth the extra cost IMO. Bahco 4-150-07-3-0 Flat Chisel Bit File 7-inch [Qty:10] BAH41500730-10EA
According to what this site says, I'd steer clear. Tfbvco Reviews (Sep 2021) Is This Genuine Or Scam?
I've ordered from Abolox as have many others I know. One time it took a long time to get the files because of a file blank shortage, but dealings were solid. And after reading that site Eric shared, I'd probably not chance it. Website launch of 12/21?
Thx guys. I'll probably get some files from Abolox. I might even cut some Elm with chains sharpened with them. I just won't split it... At least while it's green... LOL
For a site that sounds dangerously close to the word "bollocks" Abolox does look like a solid outfit to order from.
I ordered two of those Bahco files from Abolox to try. I'm keeping one and the other is for the nephew who wanted to learn square filing. He caught on real quick and did a nice job. I'm pretty sure he is now a convert. Anyway, one of the Bahco files that came was not quite up to snuff. The one I gave him seems fine but the one I used is chipping all apart. The first pic has the Bahco on the right. It was used to sharpen 3 chains and it is falling apart. Heat treatment must have gotten botched on this one. Just my luck, if there's a bad one in the barrel, I seem to find it. I even clean the gullet out and way back under with several strokes of a small round file first so the double bevel has less work to do and is easier to keep in the corner and control while filing. The file on the left is one I picked up from fleabay last winter and was advertised as a vallorbe or equivalent. Does anyone know what brand uses the horse in a hoop logo? I'm not sure what it is but I have used that file all year and it still cuts like new. It has converted at least 4 chains from round to square and sharpened at least 20-30 loops on top of that. I'm liking it whatever it is. Both edges, both sides are just not holding up. Sorry for the crappy picture, but it's a crappy file... It does still work, some... but cheez!!
That just sucks. The ones I’ve used look like that after heavy use. PM me your address and I’ll send ya one of my spares. I usually use them in cycles, so for converting round to square, I’d swipe with my oldest file a time or three, then I’d switch to a better condition one. Then for the last stroke or two, I’d use an almost new one for a nice finish. It was my way to get the most miles per file.
Thanks for the offer, but it was just a one off I'm thinking, it still works, I'm just kinda surprised. I have two more of the "horse in a hoop" files still in the packaging so I'm not hurting. I'll probably order some more when I get down to my last one.
I did a quick search and the other file is a Pferd. I never had any Pferd files before so I didn't recognize the logo... Anyway, I do like their files now... LOL I'm sure everyone knew that but me... LOL
Pferd files are good files. I've used their round files for decades. Always worked. I think I've used several chisel files from them also. Much better quality that the Valhalla brand files. Oberg was my favorite brand of chisel bit files. They lasted and cut very well.
Just for clarity Cold Trigger Finger I'm guessing you meant Vialla? I've personally found the Vallorbe to be superior. As have a bunch of other square filers over on the other forum.
For a long while there was a Valhalla or something similar brand. They were prone to chipping and getting dull. This was , well, I started chisel filing in 83 . So it was some years ago. I've got a 3 corner chisel file I got a year or so ago. It's nothin to write home about. But it was cutting last I used it. Not sure the brand. Actually 6 corner but we're always called 3 corner. If the file was a good one and the chain hadn't been rocked . I could Really get a good edge on the chain. Especially if I was using my filling stand. A 36" hard nose bar with the power head end cut off it so a 32" chain , 95 drivers in 404. would fit on it and still have room to get my toes in to hold the chain tight. And long enough to do the same with chains for 36" and 42 " bars . With 4 half ton leaf springs welded to it for legs . High enough so it could be sat at comfortably. When my eyes were young. I put up very good chains 6 evenings a week. Usually 2 chains a day. I did that for a few seasons . Then my boss sold me a Simington 450. So I slowed way down on my hand filing. But I still kept some files around. Usually Oberg double end files.
