This was on the local news tonight and in the local papers. I myself had never seen or heard of it. I wouldve loved to have seen it. One town over from where i live. Im very PO'ed someone would do such a thing! $200o reward leading to arrest and conviction. Iconic ‘Door Tree’ in Hamden cut down in act of ‘saddening’ vandalism
My wife told me about. The article says it’s in a remote locations and for that reason, vandalism was feared. I would have figured the opposite, but goes to show you what I know. Luckily a lot of hidden treasures exist out there in the outskirts and poorly accessible parts of woods and hopefully that can protect some of our oldest trees.
Sad, spent the first 20 years of my life < 1 mile from that tree, never knew about it. Used to fish in Clarks pond.
Can't imagine being that maladapted that you destroy things others enjoy just for the sheer pleasure of some sick demented 'payback'. Even lives.
For many years, it has been feared the tree would be the target of vandalism due to its remote location, in a small valley about fifty feet off New Road near Clark’s Pond,” a historical society news release said far from remote.
I chuckled at that myself....media hype. Im tempted to take a ride this weekend to check it out. Maybe 15 minutes from me.
A known hoarder like you may want to keep clear Why the hell would someone cut down a tree and then leave it? Makes no sense. Almost like they were practicing or something. Stupid.
The thought that crossed my mind was "how do you fell a tree like that"? Maybe the guilty party thought the same and tried?
When i was a kid, my older siblings and cousins made trails through the woods in the property my grandmother owned. There was one huge white oak that had an anomaly where the tree grew parallel to the ground then turned 90* vertical. It was nicknamed the elbow tree. I was too little (im the youngest of the generation by 8 years) and they would push me up to sit on it...few feet off the ground. My grandmother sold the property, land cleared and houses were built. I often wonder if the tree is still there or was cut down when land cleared. Mid to late 1970's.
In my grandparents back yard was a pear tree. Think it was the hurricane of 38 that blew it over. No one cut it and removed it. Grew like a giant F laying on its back. Died about 20 years ago. Had the best pears on it as a kid though.
Thats not good at all Buzz. Why wouldnt they have game cameras around it if they were worried about it though? I got the house covered under 200 hundred bucks and could also have a live one cheap if i didnt use a flip phone.
Thanks for sharing this Brad. Ironically, I went to college very close to there and never heard of that tree until it was cut in 2019. Here's an update regarding what happened: Man charged with destroying Door Tree says hatred for relative drove vandalism
