So my deck build 2 yrs ago Deck buildincluded footing and layout plans to build a covered 14x14’ area we’ve been living with umbrellas to get some shade since the big white oak I had taken down was a future problem and in the way. Looking for any insight on my build plans Currently a 2x10 ledger above the sliding door and double 2x10 beam to 6x6 posts. After some measurements and checking snow load tables calling for 3-2x12 beams I think that’s way overbuilt. I’m contemplating going higher rim height to prevent obstruction of view out the door but it’s really just an exit point from the master bedroom and not a viewing point. Would still like it the height to not obscure view. Was originally thinking of screening it in but I’ve soured on that due to dogs and that may push my structural design to its limits. Seen a few builds where the first two rafters are attached to the house through studs and then a double hanger carries the ridge beam- that’s what I’m leaning toward. Side of house
Gorgeous! Years ago my father had a pergola and a manually retractable awning, it worked very well for him though he had to retract it in high winds.
Here’s an inspiration picture. I’m going to frame two double trusses to hold the rafter beam and the 2x10 beams will be boxed in the center. Going to uses 6x6 posts at the house to prevent having a bunch of reframing
I have a nice breezeway between the garage and the barn. Whatever I leave in there the birds crap on it!
I like it basod Only thing I’d do differently is to consider “pocketing” your 6x6 posts so your 2x10’s are tight sandwiched, and I would also look at sandwiching some 1/2” treated plywood between the 2x10’s. Speaking of sandwiches.... now I’m hungry.
That’s what I was planning on doing but it leaves such a small piece of 6x6 left to attach to. I’m going to run a 2x6 sill plate on top of the saddled 2x10 and box in the bottom. My progress today: The right side is 1/2” high and the top is out 1/2”- probably just the 6x6 dimensions.
My parents built a deck on their house with a pergola over one part instead of a real roof. It skips the whole issue of a roof deck and snow loads, but gives cool shade from the sun. Unless you really want a roofed area
The boss lady said no pergola- it was on my radar. Every time I’ve seen one or built a deck around one I kind of wondered what good they are other than aesthetics. I guess if you hang a fabric off of it for sun shade, but then you’re still running inside when it rains. ETA/ snow loads here are random and minimal I’ve calculated to 10 and 15psf - only need 1 2x-10 achieve load bearing capacity
Actually we never had fabric on it, the slats run so that they cast shade most of the day, and in more southern climates, are angled to produce shade even at noon in the summer. Much like a blind In desert areas they add misting to the shade.
It’s rained for 3 straight days... After chasing my tail trying to make rafters and the truss with 2x10 and 2x8 I just got frustrated and abandoned initial plan. Really started doubting the total weight of material I was using. The lumber yard didn’t have the shipment of pt 2x10 in yet and so I just used all the 2x8 that I bought for rafters and the refund on the 2x10 covered materials to build trusses with 2x6 top chords and 2x4 raised sills so the ceiling fan will fit.
Got the frame squared up and braced only ~1/4” out of square. All truss parts cut and then I decided since I’ll likely never be able to reach the roof pitch again pressure washed the gable trim and siding then put a fresh coat of paint on the trim. Got all prepared to assemble trusses and all 3 tubes of construction adhesive were bad. Ordered all my metal trim and supplies- price was really reasonable
Nice! 6x6 look so much better than 4x4s. Nice beefy knee braces too. You're basically 8 weeks ahead of me, going to be doing a new covered deck attached to house. So.... why don't you just swing up north a few clicks and help a fellow hoarder out?
LOL only 8weeks!- probably after I swing up to Gray Maine and rebuild my brothers deck. Wish I had a helper today setting the trusses was somewhat precarious. Need to cut a couple more rafters and figure out how to attach them to a 4x4 for the end wall.
Made a little headway this morning before the sun got up over the house then it was 93 in the shade with some soupy air. We still have a feels like temp of 92 with the sun going down.
