Any ideas? No leaves, really deep furroughed bark on main limbs, but not necessarily on the trunk. Southeast Michigan. I am getting 20 cord of logs dropped here and saw this dead tree on the property line. Maybe I should drop it for them and process along with my log load...

I'm with buzz. I vote for an elm for the same reasons.

Hmm. Bark and branch/ twig structure look like locust to me. Possibly honey locust?

That doesn't look like any elm branches or bark to me.

Honey locust almost for sure. Pretty good firewood. My brother did get one once that split worse than elm. I don't think that happens that often.

Looks like Honey locust to me also. You can even see a few lingering leaves that match up with Honey locust.

I was hoping locust, I saw no leaves on it originally and thought it might be dead. Most trees here still have their leaves. The locust I have been looking at are all yellow and still have their leaves. I would not want to take down the tree if it is alive.

    Thanks all for the help.

Our honey locusts have lost all their leaves already. One of the first trees to drop leaves.
