What does everyone prefer for cutting weather? Buddy called and wanted to go out. I said it was too cold. Hope I don't lose my FHC card over that. Hotter the better for me during the CSS process. When it's cold like this I want to burn, not work in it.
I prefer working in the cold. Anything 30 and above works for me. Don't like bugs so the winter is best and splitting is easier when the wood is cold
I'll cut wood throughout the year in temps from around 10 degrees up to 85-90 whenever my schedule allows it.Prefer 30-60 the most though. Light rain/snow don't slow me down too much, you wont find me in the woods with heavy thunderstorms/lightning,strong gusts, deep snow or during a blizzard however. And today -5 with -30 wind chill? I'll be indoors, thanks.
I also like splitting in the cold, no bugs sticking to your face driving you nuts! Plus I find it much easier to work in cooler temps, it's much easier to stay warm than it is to stay cool in the hot weather.
I don't fell in deep snow as ya can't get away if you have too. I don't do anything more than have to on ice but no .. but working outside if I can't do that from 10 to 45 degrees I need to go farther south cause that's 6 months up here... heck I have skied Killington in June and got a text shirt to prove it
Anywhere from -15 to +15 C ( 5-60 F) is my comfort range. I only find the cold bothersome for the fact I heat up so quick, and have to dress down/dress up to not sweat to death.
I have cut when 10 below and over 100. I cut when the wood is there to be cut. BUT I stay out of the woods and weeds in the summer because of ticks. 3 people here got lime from ticks so I cut at the township or in a yard.
Headed out to do a little splitting right now, around 25 out. That's about as cold as I wanna work in. Like to work all winter, spring and fall. Too hot in the summer, I'd rather be out in the boat when it's 80+.
I busted up about 3 wheelbarrows of green poplar yesterday, -30 C (-20 F) and man o man, does the weather help a guy along or what. They were all 5-10" rounds, but pretty much all Fiskars one hit wonders, with the occasional 2nd swipe needed.
That's cold man. I'll go out there in 20-25, that's where I draw the line. I'm sure the rounds pop a little easier in those subzero temps.
If you didn't burn wood and CSS yourself................I'd say turn in your "man card" instead!!! Any poofda can like 80*F and sunny.................it takes a "special" type to BRAVE the elements most of us have now!!!
I like spring and fall temps best 30°-60° anything on either side of that, I've got plenty of other things to do. Over 60° and break to much of a sweat. And below 30°, I over dress, get sweated up and then get chilled when I put the saw down. I tend to bust butt and work fast when I have time to cut and process, having 3 little ones around really limits my time so I try to get a lot done in a little time (3-4 hour window, once maybe twice a month on average) I won't turn down a good sized tree or 2 in the middle of summer though! I just pile it and s/s it when its cooler.
well after I posted, brother came up it was a balmy 25 degrees so we had some family time and before chain got dull. I guess ice really does dull a chain quick.. I cut he split and stacked well I got twice done what he did.. and rules is rules so here a pic This having logs in back yard is too easy
It definitely cuts down on the time and your able to work on it whenever you feel. I do enjoy felling/limbing and being in the woods though. Being in town it gets me "back with nature" But the convince of bucking at my leisure would be nice at times.
I am blessed (or broke depending on how you look at it) 20 minutes to biggest town in state I got 22 acres nearest 2 neighbors got 1200 plus but the ice and snow is keeping me out of woods. loggers gave me a deal on some hard wood logs that got damaged thinning hemlock on neighbors farm as part of Forrest management. So just playing having fun..
