As I posted before, once in a great while I can find standing dead red oak that is bone dry and ready to burn. Found such a tree while on a camping trip in northern PA. About 8" diameter, , no bark, no bugs, quickly ignited, burnt great with good flames and no moisture hissing out ends. I'd love to find a couple acres of this stuff! Attached photos show the tree when I felled it and as you can see, even the local wildlife came in to admire the fire and good wood.
What? Wouldn't even give the poor guy a mouthful of food for his troubles? Heck, he's just trying to make a living too!
Is that a big Plum Single bit ax in you picture? It looks like a pretty heavy one, probably a good splitter, I would guess. Pictures can be deceiving but it looks like it probably weighs 4 and half pounds or better. Standing dead red oak is probably my favorite, year in, year out.
It is not a Plumb, but it is 4 or 4.5 pds head. Good eye. That ax was given to me by a dear departed friend of mine 30 years ago. Made in Lewiston PA, which is 20 miles north of me as the crow flies. I do have a Plumb, 2.5 pd head, got it from my girlfriend's grandfathers estate.
