hey bigger wood guys how do you get a reliable source of logs. i’ve been pretty much just asking tree guys and land clearing and they are spotty to say the least. any info would be greatly appreciated! thank you
I’ve never bought any but Craigslist or Facebook marketplace is a good place to look for sellers. Just do a search for logs on either of those two sites.
If you don't find anything you'll still get a good laugh at some of the ads. My fav tonight was $200.00 non negotiable (and dont even ask) for 1/2 cord or less of mulberry.
Absolutely. I look at all the adds daily. Craziest one running now is a kid selling unsplit rounds for $300 a cord. He says not to worry he fills his truck a little higher than the sides so you’ll get more than a cord. Granted I don’t know what kind of truck he’s using but statistically it’s probably a pickup.
Ads and OfferUp, some are gonna be downed trees or others cut ups. You figure on which makes it work for you. I know people here ask for large loads of logs and that can be 300-600 bucks and up for 3-5 cords in logs. Don’t see as often as I used to but once in awhile it’s there. Find out from housing developers, when they cut down an area you can often ask about it. Other times that stuff is earmarked. Right timing and place will help you.
At one time I hit up every tree service in three counties. Simply asked to be put on their list if they were working in the area. Have an open & accessible dump zone, take some less desirable wood if they need to get rid of it & let them dump chips if they need the room. Got lots of wood that way, several still dump here when they're working the area. Haven't pursued it hard due to a huge supply from several properties I now have access to. About 1200 acres total. Way more trees than time now. Be persistent & consistent, it'll come.
Love this. Absolutely. This is always a give and give business. One business helps you but needs your help in return. Access is key. Also the less you worry about messes, the better but in the long haul, the rewards will come and soon what was a 4-6 cord pile becomes 40-60 cord piles in 5-10 different areas on your property.
Alot of the wood I get is from land clearings for new houses, Trees that are blown over during storms. If you can find a pipeline thats going through a densely wooded area that can be a gold mind so to speak.
In my neck of the woods- I'm in SouthWestern CT but I think we're classified as technically a suburb of NYC... There are still wooded areas- I find that its feast or "famine". But even in the famine times, its probably my own fault for not being proactive enough. Without getting too into the weeds of the ways in which I seek out wood- I'd say just pound the pavement until something shakes loose, and then you have a contact. And then that person also has you as a contact. When its free, it's for me. Just keep looking and you'll find it.
