Today I was outside cleaning up a bit. I was standing about 20 feet from a dead pine tree that I was planning to take down this afternoon. Suddenly I heard a "crack," and looked up to see what was going on. Believe it or not, it was the top half of that pine tree coming down, which fortunately fell East, I was North of the tree. Had it hit me, it could have killed me. I didn't take any photos (sorry), but was a decent sized lodgepole pine, the similar one next to it that I took down on Tuesday had about 110-120 rings. The part that came down today was about 16 inch diameter. Lesson - that dead tree that you are going to get to soon, better think about it now if it is a danger to anyone or any structure. This one could have hit our carport, cars, or people. It still amazes me that it came down the very day I was going to cut it!
Good LORD was looking out for you, taking down something that could have got you when you were felling it.
Yes trees do fall!! Can be scary. As a Forester I have heard many random dead trees crack and fall over and CRASH. Luckily none that close to me. Some of these trees on dead calm days too. Just the termites undermined the base just enough or the rot and wet from the recent rain softened it up just right causing it to fall. Whatever the reason they can fall at anytime.
