Load #1 that I couldn’t (wouldn’t) turn down. A local guy about 6 miles of backroads away advertised on CL for free white oak. Kind of a rare scrounge for me, as I have only about half a face cord on hand as it is. This is the bulk of the ugly crotch sections and shorties he had, but I’m a firm believer that the only “bad” white oak is the stuff I pass on. There’s more there to get, once I have some time to go noodling with my Stihl. Chances are high this stuff will sit until fall when the weather is prime for processing.

I don't think I've even burned a cord of it over the years myself. A little here, a little there. If it was red oak I would've passed but there's a certain allure for me with white and/or chestnut oak.

Only because red is so prolific in my area and I already have a few cords of it. That and next door to me I'm working a large score of it as my time permits.
I borrowed a wood processor for the oak score next door
The white is a change of pace for me and something I don't get a lot of. As far as burning red oak goes, I can't knock it.

Oh ya makes sense. I'm pretty new to hoarding so I'm trying to refine my list of stuff to go after. Living in Texas, there are a lot of good piles to pick from on the weekends when I am able to go and look around.

In that case grab whatever oak you can. You have the benefit of a perfect wood drying climate where you're at too. Be on the lookout for that famed Osage Orange/Hedge/Bois D'Arc where you're at also. Up in my area there's none to be found as far as I know.

If hand splitting, white is a bit more stringy than red, IMO.

Glad to have it, though. Good on you for getting it.

Some decent looking wood there! If youre jonesing for some nice white oak there's still those two felled where im still working. I may just buck them to woods edge until the Fall so he can mow.
Sit until Fall? Betcha $20 youll have those SS :axe::stacker: by August.

Eric and i arent fond of the wait for oak to dry. Ideally at least 18+ months including two Summers and then it still may not be below the ideal 20% MC. Texas may be a different story as ive heard it gets rather hot down there. Limited storage on our parts doesnt help either.

None along 95 down your way? State did a boatload of cutting along it.

Id like to cut more chestnut. Stuff split real easily. Had a nice aroma to it too!
