Years ago my bride had bought a set of old brass andirons at a garage sale for decoration (the house has never had a fireplace) of some sort. For years they sat in the basement collecting dust, so this year I decided to put them to use, or get rid of them. Not liking to throw out things, they got converted into a small day wood rack for the stove. I unbolted the long legs. This left a frame that was just about perfect size for some scrap pieces of 4x4 cut to width that would let the wood rack tie into the irons. I built a double 1x8 platform, some sides to hide the ends of the 4x4s, and repurposed the handles from an old broken fireplace accessory set that I kept. The handles are a close match to the irons brass and keep the splits stacked square with the platform. A couple coats of flat black spray paint finished it off. It's small, just holds a day and a half worth of wood, but does the trick for what we need.
