So, I just realized the importance of the cant hook. I was picking up some red oak that was listed on FBook marketplace. I loaded up the smaller pieces and my car and small trailer was pretty full anyway, but if I wanted to get the bigger pieces, I wouldn’t have been able to. The big pieces were approx 30” diameter, 7’ long. (my saw is ms250). Then I saw someone on FHC mention their cant hook. Can anyone recommend a good one or ones to avoid? …or are they all the same? I’d want one with jack so I could lift the log off the ground for cutting. Thanks.
I have a logrite pickaroon and it's the tits, they have peavey's with detachable log jacks I've heard good things about! Sent from my LE2127 using Tapatalk
I can tell you one to absolutely steer clear from, and I speak w/ experience. Was bought at a local Tractor Supply Co. The handle would bend lifting heavy stuff. Junk.
Log rite or STIHL. STIHL is made by log rite. awesome tools from them. I have both the 4 foot from STIHL and the 5 foot heavy yellow one from logrite.
5 foot logrite is right handy. I have faith it can handle moving my mother-in-law should she fall down.
I have both a logrite & a peavey brand 4’ cant hook. Both are rugged tools, I do find myself going for the peavey brand one more often, the handle seems to fit my hand better & I can get a better grip on it. The logrite has a dandy rubber grip on the handle but the diameter seems a little to large for my dainty hands.
I have a Woodchuck dual with the log jack attachment. It works really well. Sent from my moto g power (2022) using Tapatalk
I ordered the Woodchuck Dual w the optional jack. Logrite wanted almost $40 for shipping. Woodchuck offered free shipping if I also bought a hookeroon (which I’ve been meaning to get also). So, hopefully they’ll be here in a couple of days. Thanks for your input. Dual and Jack - a Peavey/Cant Hook with optional Jack stand
Great tools , 5 foot is a little on the large size but it is a workhorse. I started off by making my own from aluminum tube , it works good but not perfect geometery on the angle of the hook but it is close , I actually put a straight point in it so it is now a peavy. Then I went and bought the real thing from Log Rite and went for the 5 foot yellow one they offer. Two weeks ago a coworker I have helped with wood on many occasions walks into work with a 48 inch Cant Hook from Stihl ( made by log rite ) hands it to me and says " Thanks for all your help". Very nice gesture on his part. Have on order now a 24 inch what they call a mill special , a short cant hook used for turning logs or cants on the saw-mill , this should make the job easier. Log Rite pickaroons, 36 inch 30 inch 24 inch on order for use at the mill. What can I say except I am a wood tool junkie!
Yes, Over the years there has been several mentions and threads on this brand. Just do a quick "LogOx" search in the search que. Its probably a 50-50 like vs. not...
I have the log-ox log carrier , not the complete 3 in 1 tool. I used it a couple times but it is heavy and clumsy for just moving logs. Switched to the Husky log tongs and much happier with them oner the log ox. Like Chevyman mentioned it has been a topic here before , yeah it is a crap shoot. However it is also a personal preference so what works for you and what you like might not be for everyone.
I bought 2 complete kits. One for a gift. Great company family who are based not far from me. Though I try it out every now and then, I find myself going back to my logrite pickaroon or Fiskars in one hand and my three legged tongs in the other. If I was going to rebuy, I probably wouldn’t purchase it again. It’s relegated to riding in the truck for those occasional scrounges but not used much any more. My thoughts. The carrier is heavy compared to tongs. The pickaroon also is heavy compared to my logrite/Stihl or Fiskars ones. The peavy/cant hook seems to only work on “just so” size of logs. I replaced some of the bolts that had to be taken out each time with pins to break it down. The carrier bag seems good quality but the length could be a bit more to fit a pickaroon inside without having to break it down. I never use the belt holster clip. I’ve tried but it always seems to be fiddly and drop the carrier, or I’m getting banged or poked by the carrier in the stowed position as I work. The pickaroon end I had to sharpen and make a bit more pronounced “step” on the point for it to work with my hardwood rounds or it would just pull out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
